FDA grants priority review to Wyeth infant vaccine http://www.forbes.com/feeds/ap/2009/05/07/ap6391498.html Drug maker Wyeth said Thursday federal regulators have granted a priority review to a new version of its blockbuster infant vaccine Prevnar, and the company expects a regulatory decision within six months. Wyeth ( WYE - news - people ) submitted an application to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration on March 31. Prevnar, on the market since 2000, currently protects against seven of the most common strains of a strep bacteria, Streptococcus pneumoniae. The bacteria can cause ear infections, pneumonia and more-dangerous, invasive conditions including bloodstream infections and meningitis. The new version, called Prevnar 13, protects against those strains, plus six others - the next-most common ones - that cause the same diseases. A priority review is given to products that, if approved, would represent " a significant therapeutic or public health advance, " Wyeth said in a statement. Wyeth also has been testing the vaccine in adults and expects next year to apply for approval to market Prevnar 13 for them. Prevnar registered $2.7 billion in sales last year and $755 million in the first quarter this year. Drug making giant Pfizer Inc. ( PFE - news - people ) is acquiring Wyeth in deal worth $68 billion when announced. The deal is expected to close later this year. Guest guest
A new version huh? Six years ago the " old version " worked so well on my son's immune system that he contracted strep 2 wks. after the shot (at 1 yr old) and an ear infection 2 wks. after that - 1 year later, mycoplasma bacteria off the charts and two years later, strep 10 x the ref. range.. clinical PANDAS symptoms, etc. Yeah, Prevnar was just GREAT for my kid! -- In mb12 valtrex , a DeVelbiss wrote: > > http://www.forbes.com/feeds/ap/2009/05/07/ap6391498.html > > Drug maker Wyeth said Thursday federal regulators have granted a priority review to a new version of its blockbuster infant vaccine Prevnar, and the company expects a regulatory decision within six months. > Wyeth ( WYE - news - people ) submitted an application to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration on March 31. > > Prevnar, on the market since 2000, currently protects against seven of the most common strains of a strep bacteria, Streptococcus pneumoniae. Guest guest
Prevnar, oh, you mean the SIDS vaccine? I'm almost nervous having my kids in public schools, I mean, they were doing studies on vaccinating via food (cereal, actually). I don't even like it when the dentists come to school, I am afraid they'll give my kids fluoride. I just tell people NO FOOD for them, they have allergies, I provide everything! > > http://www.forbes.com/feeds/ap/2009/05/07/ap6391498.html > > Drug maker Wyeth said Thursday federal regulators have granted a priority review to a new version of its blockbuster infant vaccine Prevnar, and the company expects a regulatory decision within six months. > Wyeth ( WYE - news - people ) submitted an application to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration on March 31. > > Prevnar, on the market since 2000, currently protects against seven of the most common strains of a strep bacteria, Streptococcus pneumoniae.
