Lovette,

What dosage were you on? I'm on 500 mgm twice a day. I finished the

Quinine and Cleosin and can't tell any difference so I was hoping against

hope that this would work. So far nothing I've taken has shown any

dramatic changes.

Thanks,

Dear : Me too. Now it's over, so we'll see what relapses I have.

I don't know what your symptoms are, but mine are severe fatigue,

brain-fogging, particularly in sunlight [even indoors], and I was unable

to integrate letters into a Scrabble board against my kids. The latter

ailment cleared up, as did the fatigue for the 5 days I was on Biaxin.

I guess we're all different though. Your strain of bacteria may

not be the same as mine...

Hi ,

I had a bad bacterial upper respiratory infection

this past March. I was given Biaxin by my regular F.P

physician. I had immediate complete relief from any

left over stiffness in my hands. By left over, I mean,

left over from the great results I have had from the

Minocin (started in March 98).

I only found out the Biaxin was my magic bullet, by

accident, as is luck goes.....

Biaxin is an antibiotic from the macrolide family. I

think that's the correct family. You can get more

information on this site:

Biaxin is a drug in the macrolide family and sometimes may prove to be

the choice for a patient over a tetracycline drug such as Minocin. Then

again, sometimes both are used.

Zithromax is in the same family as Biaxin.

Dr. Franco is having success in RA using oral Zithromax in place

of the clindamycin IVs. See FAQ.

HI Ethel.

I am amazed at the difference just a week and a half on Biaxin has made.

My knees which I almost haven't been able to bend, I am almost able to sit

in the hot tub on my knees, and bend downward where my rear almost hits my

heels! ONly a few inches and they will be there! Just two weeks ago, I

couldn't even get on my knees they were so sore and surely couldn't get

back up.

I am walking amazingly better without any stiffness about 30 minutes after

I get up. This is quite a change from where I have been for the past year!

ANd this lasts until about 11:00 when I go to bed. I was able to get on the

treadmill for 10 minutes which is a first in over a year. I still have the

pain in the knees but the stiffness is really improved! Oh, and I have cut

down to 1 mg of pred.

I still wonder if the H.Pylori had something to do with it as Dr. Franco

wants me to continue with the biaxin instead of the zithro after the

Prevpac is over this Friday. I did read that H. Pylori really plays havoc

on the immune system and TCells.

, I am taking 500 mg biaxin twice a day for a micobacterium branderi

infection along with 100 mg minocycline twice a day. I have been on the

biaxin since August 98 and the mino since Jun98. The micobacterium infection

is gone as far as I can tell, but the infectious doctor wants me to continue

until feb2000 to make sure we eradicate it. If it is doing anything for the

mycoplasmas, I don't know nor do I know how I'd every find out. Carol/Piney

I added Biaxin at the dose and rate you mentioned

since March of this year. But Dr. Franco still wanted

me to remain on Minocin. I started the Biaxin after a

bad upper resp infection in March. And wow, I noticed

almost immediate complete disappearance of remaining

annoying stiffness in several joints of one hand. Told

Dr. FRanco of this event and he prescribed the

Biaxin....

Ute, I have dermatomyositis. I have got my prednisone down to 9mg per day. I

am pretty sure it is due to the AP. Before going on the AP I was unable to

go down below 15 mg without going into major relapse. I take quite a few

supplements - vit, min and herbs, some of which may help with inflammation

to a certain degree, but to completely control it I don't think so. I tried

going down to 8 mg a few months ago and it was a no-no. My face started to

swell under the eyes. I never noticed any swelling anywhere else. I decided

to wait until Jan 1, 2000 to try again. I am hoping the bosweilla, curcumin,

ginger root have sufficently saturated my system to control more of the

inflammation as I go lower on the prednisone. I'll try to remember to let

you all know if it works. Carol/Piney

Biaxin is one of the antibiotics on Nicolson's list. It is effective

against mycoplasmas. I didn't respond earlier as I personally have not used

it, but I have heard others who said it worked for them.

Carol,

Before I started on the AP but after I was diagnosed with SD I was

prescribed Biaxin for pneumonia (which came on as a complication after

a cold). I noticed that my SD symptoms improved after 14 days on Biaxin.

When I first started the AP I was taking Biaxin for several months before I

switched to Doxy and Clindy IV's. Currently I am on a combination of Biaxin

and Doxycycline.

Hi ,

I take Biaxin daily 500mg 2x and Minocin MWF 100mg 2x/day.

I have RA since 1990, on antibiotics since 1992 (for Lyme then). Remission in

1996. Relapse in 1998 due to stress. Was thinking of trying oral Clindy--do

you use the IV's ever? Good to hear of your experience with it. The IV works

pretty good for me.

<< I have been on doxy for 2 years and Clindamycin orally for 1 year -

unfortunately not much result. So now I'll try Clarithromycin (Here in

Denmark it's called Klarcid). You take mino and clarithromycin daily - how

much do you take of both and how long have you been taking it? Do you have

RA? Do you take Biaxin and mino on the same days?

Hi Everyone,

I have a question that I think was asked before, but I never thought I could

get my doctor to give me Biaxin so I didn't save the posts.

I was at the doctors last week and he wanted to give me metho. I ask him if

I could try Biaxin and he said metho has been the drug of choose and he knows

it works. He said that antibiotics has not been proven and there were no

studies to back it up. I told him, how would you know weather it works or

not if you never let anyone try it.

I finally persuaded him to let me try it for a month. He gave me a

precription for a months worth. They are 250 mgs. He said to take 2 times a

day.

My question is has anyone used just Biaxin in place of mino? If so how many

mgs do you take and how often? Is it everyday, once a day or what? What do

you think would be the best way to use it? With or without mino. I have

been on mino for about 2 years and have not noticed any change.

Thanks in advance, also thank you everyone for responding to my question on

licorice root.

Hi Pat,

I have been on Biaxin since Dec. '99 and it has worked WONDERS! I was on

doxycycline and IV's and before that, I was on minco (all before the

Biaxin).

My doc now has me on Biaxin, 500 mg every MWF and NO mino. Don't forget the

acidophilus!!!! A must!!!! And ever since I began the Biaxin, I have been

able to go off of the clindamycin IV's which I was getting every 3-4 weeks.

Let me know how else I can help.

Sue :-)

(in N.C.)

I'm so thankful for Biaxin. In

Here is another doctor who doesn't keep up with his research. You might want

to print off the studies on our web page at rheumatic.org/studies.htm to show

him.

Hi Carol,

The combination is usually minocycline or doxycycline with Biaxin. Or

minocycline or doxycycline with Zithromax. Or minocycline or doxycycline

with clindamycin.

So oral Biaxin is replacing IV clindamycin.

I haven't heard of any of our doctors using IVs of anything with oral

Biaxin.

Hi Gloria,

Janene is using minocycline, 200mg MWF plus Biaxin, 400mg Tuesday and Thursdays.

I still think your dose is causing your pain. Did you try reducing it and see

if the pain eases up? Dr. Chiu said that patients herx very badly on Biaxin

and he starts his patients on only 50mg Tues and Thurs and builds up slowly.

He also uses minocycline in the pattern that Janene is taking.

I am taking Biaxin. I take 500 mg twice a day. It

really helped me when I first started. I feel like

I'm at a stopping point now. I do sometimes mix in
