HI - Is anyone taking NAC as well as insulin and the other meds that

go along with diabetes? I bought some NAC for Bud, but don't really

want to ask a doc if it will affect his blood sugar levels until I

have some first hand accounts. Of course, it was the pulm doc who

gave him prednisone without consulting diabetes doc (they are in

same practice -arghhh-) and of course, it was the heart doc who gave

him amiodarone without consulting the pulm doc - double arghh - We

are really ready for just one doctor to be in charge of everything.

I told my sister I was looking for a doctor's office that just had 4

parking spaces in front - one for the doc, one for the nurse, one

for me and one for the next patient. Wouldn't it be loverly?

recommend it for mucus/coughing. When I was first dx I had bad

Dear :

First of all asking questions is not bugging us, its what we are all here for, to help and support one another. As to your question, yes it is normal for those with this disease for their O2 sats to drop while doing activity. The more you do the more oxygen your body needs and if your lungs cant keep up with the demand then you need to increase the oxygen while you are active and then return it to a lower setting when NOT active. Any reading below 88 (I personally feel 90 should be the lowest) is too low for your body's needs and leads to organ damage, especially the heart and brain as they require the oxygen to be steady constantly or damage occurs within minutes. I am curious as to why you did not pick a Pulmonologist?

Hi,

The reason I am asking all these questions is my pulmo said he was a mountain climber and his sats went down. He never gave advice. He just shook his head and said he could bring me back to baseline.

I upped my o2 to 4 last night. It was in the high 90s this a.m. When I did any activity, made the beds brushed my teeth etc it went to 79.

Is this normal?

I see a new Dr. in Fl in Jan. I purposely did not pick a pulmo.

Don’t mean to bug anyone I just need some realistic answers and this group has them.

We have an extra bedroom and my hubbie wil go back to Ohio in March. Im not leaving.

,

It's true that if we keep our O2 turned up higher than we need it can keep our lungs from working as hard as they are capable of. However, in order for our bodies to be able to function well we have to maintain O2 sats of at least 90 and preferably 93. O2 sats in the 70's or 80's are doing you harm. You mentioned huffing and puffing which to me shows your lungs are working as hard as they can and yet your O2 levels are still low. I would take that as a clear sign you need to turn the O2 up.

Perhaps you should discuss this with your doctor? Did he/she tell you to turn it down? What you want is to use enough O2 to keep you as active as possible while maintaining reasonable (above 90) O2 sats. Does that make sense? I'm sure Carolyn will correct me if I'm mistaken or not stating it well. I'm really only speaking from personal experience and what my doctors and the staff at rehab has told me.

Hi,

It was very difficult to find a Dr. here

in Fl even though we have very good insurance.

I found a pulmo in a city near us but it

was all financial questions and very little about the client. I also needed a referral.

It turned me off. You pay up front and have to send in your own paperwork.

When I changed my air over to a local

company they got me a referral to a local Dr. They see a lot of patients on

oxygen. He also has several nurse ARNTS??? who I will see first. They take my

insurance and I liked their warmth and positive attitude.

My pulmo in Ohio was referred when I was hospitalized.

My other Dr. an allegist who I adored is the one who took me off the pred and got

me through the bad times.  The pulmo would shake his head and bring in his

other team to look at my xrays and say come back next month. He didn’t get

it that I had previous scarring from hypersensitivity pneumonitis and had a

huge flare up which caused me to go into P.F. My own Dr. kept trying to explain

it to him.

Hopefully the new team will actually read

my records. They have a pulmo who evidently comes to my area regularly.

As you can see from all my questions I

knew absolutely nothing except that I couldn’t breathe and had this

strange sounding disease. Thank god I found this group. I am so ignorant about

the o2.

Joyce,

Do you have any autoimmune disorders. I have Sjogren's Syndrome that goes along with all my other stuff. It causes eyes, skin and mouth to be dry. There is mediciation but it has side effects. I drink gallons of water every day....even sleep with my water bottle...it is non spill. My teeth suffer from dry mouth. My eyes drive me nuts. I use Biotene products. You can buy it almost all drug stores and Walmart, etc. It is especially for dry mouth. They make special toothpaste and gel for dry mouth.

When I went to the doctor on Wednesday, I told her about the dry mouth

and dry eyes. She told me about Sjogren's Syndrome, ordered blood work,

and told me to discuss it with the eye doctor. I have an appt with an

optometrist after New Year's. But I might need to see an opthamologist.

Will find out next year.

Dentist told me about Biotene products and I bought their mouthwash and

toothpaste also. Didn't seem to help.

I drink at least 3 diet cokes per day. The NAC needs to be mixed with

diet cola. They might have a drying effect also. I always drink the

diet coke on the " rocks " . The ice helps water it down a bit.

NAC is N-acetylcysteine (spelling?). Pulmonary doc prescribed it in

liquid form last April. A lot of people on the board take it in pill

form over the counter. It's kind of like mucinex, but in a different

form.
