Donna --I speak only from personal experience; I am not a medical professional. My husband, who has COPD has been told that when his symptoms include wheezing and shortness of breath, he should go to an urgent care center or the emergency room. He finds that Ventolin is of little help when his symptoms are this severe.

We were shocked to find that his pulmonary specialist does not treat exacerbation of symptoms, but refers the patient to the primary care specialist. On two occasions, my husband has gone to the primary care doctor when his COPD worsened. That did not work well. Both times, he ended up being taken by ambulance to the emergency room.

He is 74. Age may make a difference if you are much younger. Please let us know what action you take, and how you are doing.Judy K
