My pulmonologist says there isn't enough corticosteroid in our prescribed inhaler doses to affect our adrenal glands' production of cortisol. We don't need to taper off when discontinuing our inhalers, only when discontinuing a dose of oral corticosteroid, such as prednisone. Oral doses ARE large enough to suppress our own bodies' cortisol production. I'm sure this is the reason behind the statement on every corticosteroid inhaler I've used that says never to use more puffs or more doses than what your doctor prescribed for you. If you doubled up on your inhaled doses, you might get enough to suppress your body's own cortisol production.
