, my understanding is that heart blocks have something to do with an

impairment of conduction within the heart and there are several types. I

have had a left bundle branch block for at least 20 years that I know of,

long before my MI and subsequent afib. None of my doctors, including my

cardiologist, have been very concerned in my particular case nor do they know

what might have caused it--perhaps a virus many years ago. The only comment

by my cardiologist is that a left bundle branch block makes it very difficult

to detect ischemia on EKG and so they would have to use other signs in my

case--God forbid I should ever have another heart attack!

I think 1st,2nd and 3rd degree are all to do with the AV node (so I would be

surprised is the pulmonary vein ablation had anything to do with them). I do

know that some heart drugs can cause block if taken in too high a dose.

there's some interesting ECG examples of block here....

(scroll down the left hand side until you some to the blocks section)

According to my cardiologist, that is a true statement. I was told by someone

in another group that Verapamil can cause heart block. Since I am taking

Verapamil along with Atenolol, that bit of information caused me some

sleepless nights until I saw my cardiologist. (I didn't know the definition

of heart block, but it sounded ominous.) My cardiologist said that I had no

need to be concerned because my dose is about half of the maximum he could

give me and because I have a structurally sound and healthy heart except for

the afib. My cardiologist's explanation gave me the impression that heart

block is not a serious problem or matter for extreme concern.
