Guest guest
Has anyone on here ever had problems with seizures and their LO's? Back in Dec. my dad had an episode in which the neurologist thought it may have been seizure activity. It was a sudden onset of confusion accompanied by twitching of the extremities, drooling, generalized weakness that lasted for several hours. Afterward he slept all night and most of the next day. They did an EEG and said it was questionable for seizure activity. He has a specialist looking things over and has never ruled it out. Well, on Sunday, my dad did the same thing. He was talking fine and I was even thinking it was going to be a good day. All of a sudden, he was confused, hallucinating, sitting in the chair, both arms and legs twitching pretty consistantly. Occasionally his head and neck would twitch. He was grimacing, and then his whole body jerked. This lasted about 1 hour and 20 minutes. Then he slept and snored for about a half hour. He woke up and ate lunch and slept very restlessly for the rest of the afternoon and evening. Picking at things in the air, on his pants, on his blanket. Occasionally twitching his arms and legs and feet. Around 9pm he went into this deep sleep and snored. He has been sleeping pretty much ever since, only waking long enough to do what ever I ask, (eat, get washed, dressed, etc.) He is with it when he is awake and answers appropriately. This afternoon he is pretty much awake and watching Judge Judy! Just wonder if anyone else has had seizures with their LBD? Thanks! Guest guest
Yes Donna, we had them too and numerous TIA's. Seems like the pattern your dad followed was the same as my granda.I also have a man in my work who follows the same pattern, then sleeps a deep sleep afterwards with lots of snoring. hope this helps. .x Just Wondering? Guest guest
Hi Donna, My mom had myoclonus (also called myoclonic seizures or jerks). Generally her symptoms were rapid jerk motions, usually on one side (arm / leg..) and appeared when she had UTIs. Mom's neurologist said this is often seen in dementia whenever the person's immune system is compromised, but it doesn't appear to be a very common thread in our LBD group. (Mom's autopsy showed LBD, AD, and VD so I've wondered if this might be more a sign of the Alzheimer's or Vascular dementia?) Mom's final week of life was brought on by a different type of seizure, more like what you described, the twitching, drooling, grimacing and her body went into a frozen/unresponsive state for what seemed like several minutes. Mom was in her 10th year of dementia and the neuro said due to her existing condition, the shock was too much for her brain. She was somewhat aware at the hospital that evening, but by the next morning she was non-responsive, and never recovered. At the hospital they did a brain scan, but I don't recall if it was an EEG or what they determined from the test. Although this appeared to be a different type of seizure from the myoclonus, the doctors determined that it was also brought on by a UTI, so you might want to check for signs of infection or any other compromises to your dad's immune system. Guest guest
Donna, We had instances with seizures in November. Dad had just started taking reminyl at that time...so we attributed it to the new drug. The seizures were brief..total body stiffening etc. like other seizures that I have witnessed. Afterward, he was very sleepy, in fact, slept for about 24 hours. He was given valium at the time, and dilantin to control the seizures. We discontinued the reminyl.
