Guest guest
(and anyone else interested), I have two boys. For both my boys I was induced AND on antibiotics while pregnant. My oldest is now 9 and has been with Dr. G since he was 4. I had weaned my self off my SSRI medication before pregnancy because I didn't want to be on medicine while pregnant But, while pregnant I had reoccurring UTIs (at just about every check-up/urine screen) so I was given a strong dosage of antibiotics for 3-7 days each time. While in labor I had one half a dose of pain medicine. At 3 days old he developed a high fever, became dehydrated (he had a low sucking reflex) and was readmitted to the hospital less than 24 hours after discharge. He had blood panels run and a spinal tap. The " unknown viral infection " was written up as a possible reaction to the Hep B vaccine. Due to his slow sucking reflex and my PPD (I had previous problems with depression/anxiety/OCD) I gave up on breastfeeding and gave him the typical cows milk formula. He was fussy and up for hours during the night. He loved to be held and would scream if I put him down... and only slept through the night about 3 times in his first four YEARS (not months)- he'd wake up screaming with gut pains. After switching to the GFCF diet when he was 3 the night time screaming stopped, but he still would wake up. (FYI, I switch from a strict GFCF to the diet after 6 months with no regression.) His language never developed and he did not interact with cousins/peers. He'd line up/arrange his toys and had no typical imaginative play. He met all the physical milestones the first two years, just not the language/social. My youngest (yes, big gap!) is 21 months. For this pregnancy I stayed on my SSRI and I stayed on a daily LOW dose of UTI antibiotics to prevent an infection (reduce the need for strong medicine if I got an infection), both with the okay of my doctor and Dr G. I followed the diet while pregnant and breastfeeding. I was induced and labored without any pain medication (thanks to the Bradley method). I refused the HepB vaccine for my newborn son. Since his older brother had a reaction the hospital didn't push. He was a happy, alert, easy going baby from the start. (And he looked like he was two months old, at 9 lbs 14.5 oz in a hospital nursery full of 5-6 pounders.) He has only been up about 3 nights with fussing/screaming in his lifetime. And yes, he has had most all other vaccines, at a slower pace. He's met all milestones (including pushing trucks around making vroom noises!) and I can't believe how much I " missed " with my oldest. It's bittersweet. But a younger brother has been a great blessing to my oldest- he's really blossomed in the role of big brother. My family (and my husbands) have several immediate family members with immune system problems. For my kids, I think the vaccine schedule and the diet (mine and/or the formula or lack thereof) were the biggest factors in early development, possible triggers for an already sensitive system. Wonderwegian Re: Induced Labor I am just curious, but how many of us mom's had induced or attempted induced labors with our children diagnosed with autism? And/or, how many of us remember being on an antibiotic pregnant or our children being on an anitbiotic when given their shots? It is just a long shot, but so many mom's I talk to have reported this. Recently I read some research on a link to autism, the drug used for inductions, and antibiotics used by pregnant moms. Thank you for your input.
