Guest guest
Keeping one's weight down is difficult for most people. Of course there are those lucky folks who seem to be able to eat whatever they want, however much they can stuff in themselves, and still not gain weight. The problem I see for most of us who deal with chronic pain daily is the lack of sufficient activity. We are protective of our painful locations and therefore find ways to lower our activity level to keep from injuring an inflammed joint or muscle. Three years ago next week I finally found a doctor who would help me manage the pain with pain-relieving medications. In less than two months, actually less than six weeks, I lost 50 pounds, dropping from 230 to 180. Part of the loss was due to a flare-up of Reactive Arthritis during which I always lose some weight. I have managed to keep the weight off, though I often shoot up 20 pounds, then lose the weight gained by watching my food intake. Though I crave crunchy things, I try to eat as much fruit and veggies as possible. This also helps with the fiber needs which anyone who takes opioids should be aware of. I have cut my intake of meats and seldom do eat meat. Switching to substitutes like seasoning refried beans with taco seasonings and using the beans instead of seasoned meat. I make meat loaf for the family, but it is stuffed full of mushrooms, shredded carrots, chopped celery, onions, crackers, oats, bread soaked in milk, etc. My family likes it better than a true meatloaf. Craving a cookie or a piece of candy will send me to the kitchen. But when I get there I usually choose a peach, a kiwi, an apple, or another fruit instead. It's just a matter of keeping in control of your food choices. Ray, hanging in at 180, but hoping to drop to 175.
