Guest guest
Hi Ally, I am one of those who can gain weight at the drop of a hat but has a terrible time losing. I had gained 25 pounds since Christmas and so I really had to look at what I was eating and of course, at my amount of exercise. I was tired and hungry all the time and spent most of the afternoon and evening doing a kitchen inventory in my head and fighting off the urge to ram food into my mouth. I am typically a healthy eater, so the food cravings were what I needed to focus on most. My overall energy levels also needed a huge boost. Over the past few weeks I have finally started losing weight. I am not counting or weighing anything and I have lost 10 pounds in about 3 weeks and I am convinced that there is much more to come. I no longer thinking about food until my body tells me that I’m truly hungry and then I eat from my new selection of foods. My energy levels are far from optimum, but there has been great improvement. My tiny husband has also lost 3 pounds. I am a career dieter and I had to look for something different. As always, it’s a long-winded response, but I was documenting it for my daughter anyway. My changes may or may not work for you, but here they are… 1. I totally eliminated High Fructose Corn Syrup from my diet. I had to spend a couple of hours in each grocery store, just once for each store, while I found the brands for each of the things that I was replacing such as cranberry, apple sauce, salad dressing, mayo, bbq sauce, baked goods, bread etc. I still have a sweet tooth, and I always will, but the urge to ram food in my mouth was diminishing. This elimination also frees up the liver to do other more useful things. 2. I started baking with stevia and using it in my decaf coffee. Switching to stevia allows me to satisfy my sweet tooth without getting the body response to sugar. Since my sweet tooth comes out at night, it also helps me sleep better and I no longer have the truly bizarre 'sugar dreams' in the morning. My night sweats have been drastically reduced as well to where I only have zero or one each night. I've made muffins, cookies and banana bread so far and they all taste great. My afternoon and evening snacks consist of fresh fruit and a stevia muffin or 2 stevia cookies. I have to be careful not to have my afternoon snack too late or I have no appetite for supper! There are a few articles that suggest that stevia may lower testosterone levels, just so you know. 3. I stopped buying lite/light products! After I started reading all of the labels for the high fructose corn syrup, I noticed that many whole products have about 1/2 of the ingredients of the lite/light ones and about 1/2 again of the fat free ones. This is particularly true of mayo and salad dressings. They all have the same whole ingredients, but the lite/light and fat free ones are filled with things that you can barely pronounce to make them taste similar without the calories and fat. What I do now is buy and organic regular full fate product that just has normal ingredients like milk and eggs, and then cut it about 40/60 with plain fat free yogurt. It tastes just fine, plus you don't have to use as much because it's thinner and gives you more coverage with a smaller amount. Plus the yogurt gives me the active cultures to keep the yeast in check. 4. I nixed most of the potatoes/rice/pasta at lunch and dinner from Mon-Fri and have a salad and vegetables with meat. I also switched to multi grain bread without any kind of sweetener and use it sparingly. It’s a modified Broda diet. 5. I started drinking lemon water with lunch and dinner. I read that the acid in it makes the food enter your system at a slower rate so that you stay full longer. I'm not sure if this is working because I haven't really been paying attention, but the vitamin C in it will also help me absorb the iron from the meal and it supposedly helps to clean out the liver. To make the lemon water, I squeeze one lemon and one lime for juice and mix it in a glass quart bottle. I then mix it half & half (8oz & 8oz) with plain water to have with lunch and/or dinner. It sounds like a lot of changes, but it's really not. My objective was to eliminate the cravings and I have done that. I’ve just made substitutions of what I was already eating and so I never have to go hungry and I'm not counting anything. As always, I've done too many things at once to know which are really doing the trick, but I think the changes are all working together to clean up my system. My energy levels are to the point where I think I'll be able to start exercising this week. That's the plan anyway. Judy aka - I’m not lazy, I’m hypoactive Yahoo! Messenger with Voice. Guest guest
Sounds like a good plan. I'm opposite in that I can lose weight at the drop of a dime. I am trying to maintain between 135 - 145 (ideal for me is 145), but having some difficulties. If I just can get my stomach in order. I will have one good day, eat well, only to have the next day full of grief. I still haven't figured out why I suffer with the IBS so much. I try to watch the foods I eat, especially my numerous food allergies. Could this be an adrenal problem (if that makes sense)? Should I be working with a nutritionist? Or just with a gastreologist? Help somebody!! Kady > > > Hi Ally, > > > > I am one of those who can gain weight at the drop of a hat but has a terrible time losing. Guest guest
Who is your doc that is willing to Rx Armour? What is their specialty?akswan88 wrote: Hi Ally1I've only been diagnosed for one month now, so I don't know for sure, but in the past four years I've gone on the Suzanne Sommers eating plan (protein by itself with non-starchy veggies, fruit only in the morning on an empty stomach by itself, no caffeine, no sugar, no starchy veggies at all, and only whole grain bread by itself once in a while) basically, and I always lost so much weight so easily and felt smarter. In my research on hypothyroidism this past month, I've learned that eating lean protein and veggies mostly seems to do very well for losing weight for hypos. I'm no expert, just that it seems to work for me (I think I've probably been hypothyroid for 10-12 years, since my second son was born). And when I do a circuit routine with weights, also getting my aerobic exercise, I find I lose more inches and feel better, than if I just do aerobic activity.I'm going to go back on a strict, regulated exercise routine in either September or October, when the weather starts to cool down a little, and I get my thyroid levels adjusted. My doctor is actually going to prescribe Armour!! (yippee Dr. !)>> > > Is anyone working on getting back in shape? Are you doing something> specific that is working well for you? Guest guest
OK. I just double checked. His name is Jubel , and he's a Physician Assistant - Certified. He works under Dr. Don McLarey, M.D. at Midland Family Medical Services in Midland, TX. (They used to be Oasis Medical Services). They are located at 1300 W. Wall Street and their phone # is . This is just a primary care " family doctor " type place. I adore " Dr. " - he takes the time to really listen to you and his wife is hypothyroid and she is taking Armour and loves it, so that may be one reason he is open to it! He agreed to run all the tests I asked him to run and wanted to know which books I found most helpful and which websites. He had never heard of RT3 but after I showed him the literature, he agreed to look into that aspect more. He agreed that a good doctor needed to " shut up and listen to the patient - they will tell you what they need " . He's going to monitor my friends attempts to heal herself with Chinese herbs/nutritional supplements, and other holistic approaches without taking thyroid hormone replacement. He told us he wants to know what works. > > Who is your doc that is willing to Rx Armour? What is their specialty? >
Guest guest
Thanks Jan P for letting me know about this. I have learned so much from you all. I will definitely look at the ingredients more carefully. My laporoscopy surgery was successful. They found endemetrious and scar tissue which had attached a part of the colon to the uterus. Still a little sore from the incisions but otherwise, I feel fine with that part of the abdomin. Guest guest
Also... it is in medicines... I had to switch to compounded (in an olive oil capsule) thyroid and quit using Armour, because it has corn bindings (I know I did not use the correct terminology). --- Kady wrote: > > Thanks Jan P for letting me know about this. Guest guest
It is absolutely ridiculous how many medications have corn and lactose fillers and binders, when it is common knowledge that these are common allergens. The Thyroid-S from Indonesia, that some folks have ordered online, has only tapioca starch as a filler. Everyone who is allergic to tapioca, please raise your hand. I see no hands. . . . Guest guest
Wow, I didn't even know until now that Armour has corn fillers/binders. I'm glad I'm not allergic to corn; but I have severely cut back on my intake of corn products (including the insidious HFCS -- high fructose corn syrup). I think my biggest problem is wheat. I notice that when I toast wheat bread, I sneeze every time, without fail. It's much less of a problem when I toast the sprouted-grain breads made by Food For Life (the "Ezekiel" bread) than the mass-produced nutrient-deficient breads from the supermarket.~Chelle>> It is absolutely ridiculous how many medications have corn and lactose fillers and binders, when it is common knowledge that these are common allergens. > > The Thyroid-S from Indonesia, that some folks have ordered online, has only tapioca starch as a filler. Guest guest
Hi, Stace. On this list we call it " $ynthroid " . It is more expensive than Armour, the ruling favorite, but it also lacks several thyroid hormone, especially T3 which is the active form which many people need due to faulty or non-existent conversion. For some people, it works fine. You may not be one of those people. We have discovered that the really good Thyroid docs seem to prefer Armour (not a synthetic, it is pig hormone) or even better are interested in getting each patient on WHATEVER they need, in the dose they need. Most likely, you are undermedicated. This is extremely common with hypothyroid folks. The docs continue to dose according to TSH and once on thyroid hormone TSH is not a good gauge. It is very tricky finding a truly enlightened doctor and easy to want to trust whoever you end up seeing but the proof is in the pudding. If you aren't feeling better after a good trial on a particular doc's regimen, he probably isn't the doc you want. Send him Xmas cards if you like but search out someone who will help you. And weight loss is more difficult for us even when we ARE medicated properly. Impossible if not. Terijo

Guest guest
Hi. My name is Debbie Webb and I am new to the group.I have hypothyroidism. I have been seeing an endocrinologist for over 2 years. Every 6 months, blood work and ultrasound. He started me on 10 mg synthroid and now I'm up to 137mg. When I 've gone in for my appt. he has never mentioned anything about my goiters growing. At my last visit in December, now he wants to remove my throid completely. When I asked him why all of sudden it needs to be removed, he said because they have been growing all this time and now are over 2cm. Now, since I've NEVER had surgery of any kind, this scared me half to death. I've totally lost faith in this dr. And to tell the truth, I think I have more symptoms now than before all this started. In reading some of the other posting, I realize that a lot of my other problems could all be related to my throid. I feel like this group could really help point me in the right direction. Guest guest
Thanks Kim. My doctor has called them nodules and goiters so I thought they were the same thing. Also, dr. says that my thyroid levels checked with the boold work are within normal range. Shouldn't my symptoms be better. I've decided to change dr. DEBBIEKim Hanson wrote: Welcome Debbie! So do you have goiter or do you have nodules? For some reason the way he is measuring it makes me think of nodules...but I could be totally off base. Isn't goiter treated by surgery more if the symptoms are bothering the patient? I would be quite upset too. Like you said why was he not sharing the information as he went along? I am the type that likes the information shared...not to be kept in the dark. I definitely would not go to surgery until you are at peace with the situation. For me that would be having all of the options explained to me, like further observation, etc. If the MD did not want to observe longer I would want a good explanation. Finding a surgeon that I was comfortable with would also be critical. I'm sure others will share that have more knowledge then I do. Guest guest
You might want to get a second opinion. You might also need to find a new doc. What is his reason for wanting you to have a thyroidectomy? Does he suspect cancer? Are the nodules impinging on other structures and or causing pain, difficulty breathing, difficulty swallowing? Do get copies of all lab reports and ultrasound reports. DEBORAH WEBB wrote: Hi. My name is Debbie Webb and I am new to the group.I have hypothyroidism. I have no symptoms from these nodules, no pain, difficulty breathing or swallowing, nothing. I even told him, if they are soooo large, wouldn't they bother me. Guest guest
I know everyone is different, but my nodules were painful, made swallowing and talking hard, couldn't yell (I have a 5 year old) and couldn't sing. I wanted mine removed because of this. Glad I did. But, if they didn't hurt or weren't visible not sure. Re: New to the group Definitely changing dr. I've lost all faith in this guy. Guest guest
Yes, the greater question to ME would be Is It Thyroid Cancer, and if so, has he done a Fine Needle Aspiration on it before determining that it needs taking out. Nodules grow withIN the thyroid, goiter is simply an enlarged thyroid itself. FNA can't always determine if a person has cancer, if it is negative, but often thyroid cells can be found with this method, if it's there. Has he tried this, or is he going completely by the SIZE of one or two nodules? Re: New to the group Definitely changing dr. I've lost all faith in this guy. Guest guest
I think he is only going by the size. He wants to send me for a fine needle aspiration. The place is way on the other side of town from me, probably 30 miles one way. I callled my insurance co. and found out that I could get this done at a hospital about a mile from me. But this dr. is dead set on me going to this Advance Medical Imaging location. The hospital said they would pick up all the previous test results before the procedure was done so they would have them. I think as long as I agree to have this done, I should be able to go to the location convenient for me. Guest guest
Ask him why he wants this particular place. It may be the hospital is dreadful at this type of thing, or has a history of having to do repeats. If he does not have (to you) a valid reason for not referring to the hospital, then it is up to you and your insurance company where you have it.
