Guest guest
Hi, I mostly lurk and soak up all of the wonderful knowledge. Now I have a question. I have done a little research on the web and 's about.com site. Mostly I find tinnitus as a symptom of hypo, but I also found it listed on the questionaire for hyper. I don't work anywhere loud (have 3 kids ), never been in to rock music, never had ear problems, so I am wondering if this is somehow related to my thyroid. (i'm hypo, being treated by a great doc in DFW area) Just trying to figure out if the voices are coming next or what!?! Anyone have this problem? (hissing, no room spinning stuff like with vertigo) I am not sure how long it's been going on, but at least 6 or more months. It would just be in one ear or the other (don't remember one being worse than the other) and then go away. I would notice it mostly at night or sitting in class before lectures (37 yo back in school - ugh!) but more quiet times than when I was around my kids and stuff. For the last few weeks it has become LoUdER and constant. I just got back from seeing Charlotte's Web. I went to the bathroom and as I was walking out a lady turned on the hand dryer thing and I thought I would scream bloody murder. A couple of weeks ago I had my ears checked out (unrelated problem) and they weren't infected and there was no fluid. That doc gave me some vertigo medicine (Meclizine) (even though I told her about 10 times the room doesn't spin) she told me to take it when the room spins... I don't know if it's supposed to help with this hissing, but it's not. Sorry for rattling on. Trying to give enough info. Thanks, Holly Holly
Guest guest
Holly This doctor is trying to tell you that he thinks that there is a possibility that vertigo might happen, but that doesn't mean that it will. I have the hissing. For 8 yrs now. It is earringing, but has a different sound than " ringing " . Sounds like the neighbors left their faucet on all night, and you are listening with your ear against the wall. Changes frequencies and loudness, etc.....With me, yes, the hissing was first, for about 3 or 4 days. Then the vertigo started. After hearing frequency tests and such, and ear exam, I was told to take the antihistamine, flonase, etc.....that there was " probably " a small amt of fluid around the inner ear (not the middle ear where it can be seen, etc..). It has never dissipated at all, I have permanent earringing in the manner you are describing, and yes, I believe it is autoimmune antibody related. There is a little bit about it on the internet, the relationship of the thyroid antibodies or other antibodies to the effects on the inner ears. I personally think that my thyroid size has changed and that there are some things going on with space occupation that are affecting all of this. Have you had a recent thyroid scan or ultrasound? I haven't, but I suspect it. Anyway, the earringing has never stopped in all this time. Seems like stress and almost anything makes it increase in loudness and intensity, and sometimes it's barely there, but it never completely goes away. I have Hashimoto's. I had falling down vertigo all those yrs ago, but I never have had it sense, and it went on for a few wks or so, with the nausea, etc....I still have very very subtle balance problems, like I can't stare straight up above my head at the stars without taking extra balance measures, or look straight behind me while rapidly walking, those sorts of things. Guest guest
I know it is definitely a thyroid symptom. But thought I would mention I have heard the aspirin can cause ringing in the ears. Kim Re: Hissing snakes in my ears!!! Guest guest
Interesting. I have the hissing/ringing too. I first noticed it a couple of years ago. No vertigo - yet.I have no thyroid (TT for cancer). The final pathology report said I had Hashi's.And I've noticed it's been louder in the last couple of weeks - when I've been on a stress dose of Cortef after a very stressful trip to see relatives. I go back to my normal dose this weekend. I'll have to try to notice if the volume lessens. Guest guest
Ah yes, if it were only that simple. I don't take aspirin, it makes me feel very very tired. I've read that it's toxic to the inner ears of some people, though it is a wonder drug for many purposes. RE: Hissing snakes in my ears!!! >I know it is definitely a thyroid symptom. Guest guest
Please let us know how that goes. I have no idea what my cortisol level is, though I suspect that it's pretty low. Don't know if high or low would do this, and haven't read that anywhere either. Re: Hissing snakes in my ears!!! Interesting. I have the hissing/ringing too. I first noticed it a couple of years ago. Guest guest
Holly, Yes, many of us have tinnitus, just seems to go with the territory. I do remember having it as a child, when I was sick and my Mom would give me baby aspirin. I haven't taken aspirin in years and years, since other options became available. It's always more noticeable when it's quiet and it's worse when I'm tired. For me, especially at bedtime. I use a nature sound machine set to 'rain' to drown it out. I hope it lessens with optimal treatment. Carol >> Hi,> > I mostly lurk and soak up all of the wonderful knowledge.
