Guest guest
Pell grants do not count as income for anything that I know of. I get SSI, disability and foodstamps. And it doesn't count as income if you have file income taxes either. Pell grants are to help cover cost while you go to school. And do not have to be paid back. Great idea taking classes. I just finished an Associates in Arts. I did it all on pell grants. Vickie litleqtee@... wrote: I have SSI but now I'm nervous everytime I have to deal with Social Security. I've been taking a couple classes on-line to inch my way through college while I'm sick. Because of that I'm eligable for a Pell Grant ($1000/yr which would cover books at least), but I don't know if I'm allowed to recieve the help. I need more income somehow. I can barely afford food, bills, and rent, much less prescriptions.
Guest guest
Awww Alia, You need not be afraid of SS. If you go to ss.gov and do some reading if you are able, you will find exactly how much money you can make in addition to your SS without losing your SS benifits. You should call and ask them what they would suggest you do for these other things, they may recommend some level of Aid. They are there to help you! (once you have won your case of course) Other than sending a standard form every few years, re evaluating your conditions to make sure nothing has changed that would mean to your betterment, there is literally little communication with them at all. You have been through the hard and scarey part, now it's time to find out what you can get to help your situation. They are a wealth of information if you only ask. Hope this helps! > > I have SSI but now I'm nervous everytime I have to deal with Social Security. I've been taking a couple classes on-line to inch my way through college while I'm sick. I just don't know how to say this to social security because I'm afraid they'll take it all away from me for going to school at all. > > -alia >
Guest guest
thanx vickie, ?i did call ss to double check and they said that as long as it was only used for school purpose it's fine. that's a term's worth of tuition and books, so i'm happy. thanx for your help. -alia that I know of. Guest guest
Your welcome. Also note that any extra pell money that you have left over will come to you in the form of a check. This doesn't have to be reported on income taxes. And it doesn't take away from you ss either. If they ask you use it for gas to get to school... and pencils and paper, etc. I usually got at least 700 back free cash. But I guess that depends on where you go to school and how much your books and tuition are. Glad I could help. Vickie

Guest guest
I don't file taxes in California. Check with your state to see the minimum you have to make to file. If you make under that amount with your disabiity money, then you don' thave to worry about it. And believe me, it's nice not having that extra stress come April. Guest guest
No... don't have to file income taxes unless I have actual income from a job. My oldest son claims me and my 17 yr old daughter on his taxes. That way he gets the credit for me AND we get the Earned Income Credit for her. Guest guest
I live in the state of Michigan. The Social Security Administration sends me a form during tax season. You have to complete the back of it, and if you make over a certain amount, then I'd have to file, but in five years I've never had to. Guest guest
Hi Kulia, This is an awful thing to say in some respects, BUT .. well, we get so little money thus far they do not have the nerve to tax people (in our 'new-to-us') income bracket. I always think of those who have always had this kind of income and try/ tried to better themselves. Love, and try to be strong-- Jane, the one with the hound (also hoping you live somewhere that food and other costs of living are not too bad; it's hard to survive). > > Even though if you get SSI, disability and FS...do you still file > income taxes?~Kulia
Guest guest
Actually, I would file even if you don't have the income to do it. I say that because to qualify for many programs you have to show your income taxes from the prior year or current year. So, you can do the easiest form in very little time and thus have proof you qualify for stuff like Medicaid or free clinics or whatever. Guest guest
That is interesting Vickie. I didn't know that a son or daughter can claim a parent that is on disability as a dependent. I thought that if you are getting some kind of disability, you can't get it if you are living with someone else. I wonder if it varies from state to state, but probably not because social security is a federal program. Guest guest
I have no idea about it varing from state to state. We get our taxes done by people that have been trained through AARP. They are very up on these things. Glad to be of some help. Maybe check it out for yourself and see if it works for you. Vickie kuliaola2000 wrote: That is interesting Vickie.
