Hi , my name is Judy and I'm in Plano. I'm so happy that you're parents found that doctor! I've been on Levothyroxine (Eltroxin or Synthroid) for over 20 years now and I'm hopefully about to switch to Armour. I've heard great things about that drug as compared to the synthetics. I was actually diagnosed about 35 years ago and spent the first 15 on or off the meds as I was young and didn't take it very seriously. My TSH back in '86 was a whopping 62 (yes there is no decimal in there lol) and so I've been diligent about taking it ever since. I hope you find a great doctor. Check the list in the 'files' section and see who else is near you to compare them before you go. I'm going to see a doctor from the list next week. He has an * beside his name which means he is highly recommended and he's also on my insurance plan. It doesn't get much better than that! Welcome... Judy

Hey ya'll,My name is . I was born in 1969 without a thyroid gland.Thankfully my folks found a GOOD pediatrician who figured this outwhen I was 4 months old, before any serious damage had been done. Iwas subsequently put on Armour thyroid for a while (not sure howlong), which my father later told my husband made me "unstoppable".:-) Later my pediatrician put me on a combination of Synthroid andThyrolar, which apparently did me some good but not as good as theArmour. In my adolescence my mother took me to an endocrinologist whotook me OFF the Thyrolar and put me on Synthroid exclusively. Sincethen I have either been on Synthroid or a generic. We moved to Texasin 2001 from California (never did find a good doc there). A friendof my mother-in-law recommended a D.O. nearby who actually *listened*to me and didn't treat me like a lab rat. She was bold enough toprescribe to me levothyroxine at 175 mcg (I had been on 150 mcg foryears with very little benefit other than simply keeping me alive andbreathing). My energy level went up slightly. However, I believe nowthat I should either be on Armour again, or on a T4/T3 combinationagain. I believe I'm overmedicated with T4 (and during my last visitwith my doc -- not the same one I started going to, since she moved upto Dallas -- he expressed concern about my higher-than-normal T4 levels).I will be calling a new doctor today who has a health & wellnesscenter in Katy. He is listed in the About.com Thyroid Disease "TopDocs" list with several good recommendations. His name is Dr. Hotze and the wellness center bears his name. They offer freeconsultations. I will keep ya'll posted as to how the consultationturns out and if I will continue to see him or one of his associates. Thanks for "listening" to the story of my low-thyroid life. :-)Take care, K.Houston, TX

If you do not want to spend much money, but can travel to the DFW area, Launius in ville has very reasonable prices and will Rx generous doses of any thyroid medication you may need. His prices for labs are cheaper than HealthcheckUSA. wrote: Well, money isn't something I have a great deal of, so it's a goodthing I mentioned him on this board before I called him! *wipes handacross brow* Whew!I will definitely be checking out your Armour Docs! :-) Thanks forthe heads-up!~ K.Houston, TX

Wow, small world! :-) I am in Riata Ranch, off Barker Cypress north of

West Rd. I used to babysit my cousin's kids when we first moved here.

She is in Katy, and to get to/from her house I would drive by the

Windsong subdiv. every day. I remember thinking, " What a lot of nice

trees! " :-) (I'm sure they're nice until they start dropping leaves

all over your front lawn, right? ;-) LOL)

Right... pine trees are a pain!!! We worry about the

winds knocking them over into the houses!! :-) But

nice shade. We'll have to get together sometime.

I did not see Dr. Hotze, I saw Dr. Ellsworth. Not sure how easy it is

to see Dr. Hotze, but it is worth a try! I agree that you should go in

for a consultation. Be aware before you go that this isn't a normal

doctor's office. The initial set of appts., meetings, follow ups, etc.

is around $2,000 now I think. You don't make an appt. just for

thyroid, get those blood tests and a prescription. Their concept is

that all the issues associated with thyroid need to be treated to build

up your immune system. I certainly don't disagree with that, but it

does come with a price. I continue to take the Physician's Preference

vitamins they recommend, and I definitely feel a difference when I

consistently take them.

As for other docs in the area, I have not had a problem going to any

doctors and having them refill my thyroid prescriptions (GYN and GP).

However, I got the inital scripts from Hotze, so that might be the

difference.

.....Hi Houston posters. I am in Richmond, which is west of Katy.

Hi I'm new to the group. I guess my intro had not posted.

I spoke to Dr Hotze's office yesterday. The first visit is $3000 PLUS, $150-200 for compounded hormones, PLUS $100-$150 supplements. They give you a receipt for insurance. Insurance will reimuburse at anywhere from only 20%-60%. They do not make payment arrangements.

$2000?!?! Good grief! I don't have anywhere NEAR that amount of money

to just spend on doctor appts! *whew* Thanks for the warning, !

LOL :D I think I'll find myself another doc, or else hope I win the

TX Lottery so I can afford to go to Dr. Hotze. , does that

Dr. Gibb (or is it Dr. Gibbs?) rely just on the TSH results or is

he/she more thorough, taking the full panel of tests, actually

LISTENING to patients and taking their symptoms seriously?

Yikes, it's even worse than I thought! :-O Nope, I'm definitely NOT

going to the Hotze Health & Wellness Center. LOL I'll consider it a

BLESSING that my emails to them were returned as undeliverable. I

don't have insurance, I WOULD have to make payment arrangements, and

I've already got all the supplements I need.

I sure am glad I joined this group! Ya'll saved me a bundle of money! :-D
