prozac question

Hi Barbara.

I took prozac and other ssris a few years back. I was able to stop

taking them without noticable problems. But I was pretty sick at the

time, so any negative effects may have been lost in the misery.

Hi Colleen. Prozac may be a great choice for your son. My daughter has not

used Prozac, for a very specific reason. Her psych says Prozac is activating

and my daughter was not able to sleep when she first saw him, so he thought it

was best for her to avoid it. I have heard of others having success with it.

It is my understanding that it is approved for use in children, and this is

not the case for all of them. Good luck. Kim

I've never run across anyone saying that one of the ssri's is better

than the other.

If a member of the family has had success with one then that's a good

choice to start with.

I've heard of prozac falling anywhere in the list of ssri's

tried....either it was one of the early ones tries and it never

worked...or it was one that worked for a while then stopped working as

well.....or it was the last one tried after many and brought enormous

relief to a child who needed relief BAD.

If this doc is more familiar with prozac - maybe has had good luck

with it as a first choice....

Since preferences (other than family ties) aren't really talked

about....I'd ask WHY? Perhaps he said it just to put a positive side

on it...give you some confidence and hope?

Hi, My dd was put on prozac at age 12. After 3 months of not working

and developing tiny red bumps, was switched to luvox which is working

for her. Her pdoc put her on prozac because it is approved for kids.

From what I have seen on this list, you just don't know how a med will

work until you try it. I'm sure the pdocs take all kinds of things

into consideration before prescribing a particular med. Good luck and

be sure to report to the doc, all you observe, good or bad.

Colleen,

Doctors are different. Some will work with mainly one SSRI

medication, others will go by those approved for kids, others go by

experience showed over the years in their practice....

With back in 8th grade (11th grade now) I was looking at

possible meds - though his would have to be in liquid, no pills - and

was decided on Celexa or Prozac or...Zoloft? Can't say " why " really,

but Prozac has worked great for many, kids and adults. I liked that

it looked easier to stop too, being longer lasting in the system, as

opposed to the weaning off of. Anyway, chose Celexa and went with it,

but if it hadn't worked Prozac was my next choice to try.

As to why your doctor might think it's the best option - dunno. Maybe

just he's had good success with it in his practice or has read studies

on it or it's recommended....

It was tough deciding, you'll read one person's child having a

terrible experience on a med, another had success with the same med.

Good luck, let us know how things go!

Hi Colleen,

My son (8) has been on Prozac for about a year and a half. It is the first

med the doctor wanted to try and it has worked well for him. My son

actually was doing so well that after a year the doctor had him come off,

but OCD symptoms soon appeared, so he has been back on for about 6 months.

I think with any medications most doctors will " start low and go slow " to

see how the child reacts and gauge any side effects. My son doesn't seem to

have any in all of the time he has been taking Prozac. I was concerned

about the side effects, especially about the medication making it harder for

him to sleep, but one of the most immediate things we noticed once he went

on was that he was sleeping better! The doc said that it may have been

because he started to feel less anxious while on the meds. Since then his

ability to fall asleep has been a bit up and down, but overall it hasn't

been too bad at all. He's usually asleep by 9:30 whereas there were days

when he couldn't fall asleep until after 11:00 p.m.

If I am remembering correctly, the doctor wanted to start with Prozac

because it has been on the market longer than a lot of others and has had

more testing, especially among children.

I know it is hard to make the initial decision about medication. I remember

that my husband and I had a hard time with it, but now our son, , is

doing really well and the doc wants to try taking him off again and

ironically, I'm reluctant to do so!

Hope this feedback helps in making your decision.

Our doctor prescribed Prozac for the same reason and we have seen the

same results as you have. I hope that it works for a long time!

Hi Colleen,

I don't know if it's the best option for every child, but my now 15 year old son

has been on Prozac for well over a year and has done great with it. It hasn't

gotten rid of the OCD completely, but has helped enough to give him back most of

his 'normal' life. He is on 40 mg. and I've been told it can go safely up to 60

mg or more if needed.

But after so long, I am soon going to be switching him to Inositol to try it

out. I hate keeping him on the Prozac for so long. Our psych won't give her

'approval' professionally, but said it's just like a vitamin and can't hurt.

Anyway, I think you should give the Prozac a try. It was a real miracle drug

for us.

Good luck and all the best to you all,

Lainey

Prozac was the best ssri for my son. He took tablet form however. At

45 lbs he started at 5 mg daily. You may want to double check

somewhere about liquid Prozac, because I remember reading years ago

that some contained alcohol. Every manufacturer is different and you

may have to contact them to get all of the ingedients.

My son was on Prozac and initially did great with depression with it. The

doses for OCD treatment are much higher than those for depression. He

experienced side effects while trying to go up to 80 mg from 60 mg. 10 mg

seems

like a small dose. You said you have seen much improvement and that's probably

why. It takes a bit to build up and he'll probably try to push the dose

until you see improvement or there are side effects. Unfortunately, there is no

magic dose/pill for this - it's a lot of experimentation to see what works and

what doesn't.

Do you think that's too much for her age?

I'm new at all this, and I'm just wondering what mg anyone elses kid

is on, or was on at that age for OCD?

Connie -

My daughter is 15 years & is on 50mg per day. Her doctor said this is a low

dose for Prozac. She said the average dose is 80mg for someone my

daughter's size. She started at 10mg per day & was increased 10mg each visit

(once

per month) until we reached this point. We didn't see any real improvement for

nearly 4 months. Give it time. Prozac has changed my daughter's life - and

ours.

We saw small changes within about 2-3 months - things that we didn't even

know were OCD related until they started to diminish after she was on Prozac -

then we realized how much the OCD had been affecting her life for years and we

were unaware. It was a real eye-opener!

I know it doesn't work the same for everyone, but it worked wonders for us!

I hope you have the same experience.

My daughter was diagnosed at 9 years old, and started at 30 mg. Now, at 11, she

takes 60 mg. and has for quite some time now. 5 mg. sounds very low, but perhaps

your doctor is trying to build up slowly. I hope you see some results soon!
