Guest guest
Nail ridges can be caused by hypothyroidism, low ferritin or too little protein. They may also be a sign of other health problems, but I am not sure which ones. Do ask your doc about this the next time you see him. Guest guest
Ferritin is storage iron. Anemia generally shows up first in low ferritin numbers before you see it in your CBC and other iron tests. The symptoms of low ferritin are very similar to those of hypothyroidism: fatigue, hairloss, being cold. And hypothyroid folks are also more likely to have low ferritin. As with thyroid levels, just anywhere in range will not do for ferritin. Most folks need to have their ferritin above 50 to be free of symptoms, even though the range goes all the way down to 10. I was losing hair with a ferritin of 29. My doc says his goal for my ferritin is midrange:115. "Serum ferritin" or just "ferritin" is the name of the test. You can read more about anemia in hypothyroid folks on the site of California endo Ted Friedman. http://www.goodhormonehealth.com/symptoms/symptoms.htmllcraig61 wrote: What is ferritin? Thanks, Loretta>> Nail ridges can be caused by hypothyroidism, low ferritin or toolittle protein. Guest guest
I have 'em too. Must be thyroid related, Dr. R. took note of them at my first appointment. Mine aren't as bad as yours, not splitting. Not sure what to do about them, maybe a vitamin? Carol >> Does anyone know if these ugly nail ridges are caused by my > hypothyroidism? Guest guest
Faye, It would be interesting to read that website you found. Do you have any idea where the site is? My nail ridges aren't black and my ferritin was at about 163. I've noticed that when I was feeling my worst, I had no moons on my nails. My moons have started to come back except on my ring fingers and they are all very small except on my thumbs. Weird but I feel that these are definate symptoms of something but who knows what. Thanks for everyone's imput. Dana > > > > Does anyone know if these ugly nail ridges are caused by my > > hypothyroidism? I think we should do a poll, I bet there's a bunch of lefty's. Carol >> I had to look at my nails after all the discussion about them. My left hand only has a moon on the thumb. I am left-handed. ???? My right hand has moons on all the fingers except pinky. I do have ridges in my nails on both hands and feet. I did find this nail website.
