I used to get Armour at Walgreen's. Now I get it from Kroger's. Call around. Make sure it is name brand, not generic. Deborah

Hi Chelle,

It looks like we're all really getting somewhere with the new doctors. Is Dr. Gibbs from Jan's list? Can you tell me what dosage you were on with the synthetic? I'm on .1mg or 100mcg now and I'm not sure how that would convert to grains. I'm not sure if you're a member, but I checked earlier for myself and Costco has Armour Thyroid. I get all my scripts at Costco since they are so much cheaper and I can usually get them without using my insurance... Judy

Dr. Lynn Gibbs - Katy, TX

I saw Dr. Lynn Gibbs (male doctor) this afternoon. So far so good. He Rx'd me 2 grains Armour with 11 refills after I told him that according to my parents I did very well on it as a child, and that I haven't done that great with synthetics during my childhood and adulthood. Now I just have to find a pharmacy that will dispense Armour for me. Dr. Gibbs said it's "dirt cheap" but he also said that I'll more likely find it at someplace like The Medicine Shoppe than at bigger or chain stores like Wal-Mart or Walgreens. Is that true, or is he just misinformed? He also ordered a few tests today including Free T3, Free T4, TSH, Total T4, Ferritin, TIBC (Total Iron Body Capacity -- something my sister who's a P.A. recommended I have done), and HDL/LDL cholesterol. He wants to see me in 6 weeks, at which time I'll have the same thyroid tests done. The lab tests cost about $500 but the girl who took my blood said that they would work with me to either make payment arrangements or if my household makes less than a certain amount that they would write off part or all of the cost. Heh -- with my luck my husband probably makes just over the limit. But as long as the lab is willing to work with me on payment arrangements, I can maybe get the lab tests done about every 3-4 months (not 6 weeks like he wants me to -- I need to pay off one set of lab tests before I get the next set). At least the office visit was only $54. That helped a little. Anyway, he seems like a very good doctor. He listened to me, and he didn't dismiss my symptoms as unreal, unrelated to my thyroid, or childish. When I told him that after my morning exercise routine I'm completely wiped out for most of the day, he seemed to understand that as being related to thyroid (or low iron, whichever). So that's my first report on Dr. Gibbs. ~Chelle

Chelle, I’m not familiar with the

pharmacies in your area, but I get my armour at Walgreens. There

was one time they didn’t have my exact dosage in stock, but subbed alternate

size tablets, equivalent to my prescribed dosage, for me so I wouldn’t be

left in a bind, for the same price. I probably pay a little more for it

there, but they’re just a few blocks from my office, plus all my

prescription history is accessible online with them, so I can keep up with all

my meds in a central place and print out reports for tax purposes, etc., so it’s

worth a few extra pennies for me.

Good luck with Dr. Gibbs!

I think you can get prescriptions filled

at Costco without a membership. I just don’t use them because there isn’t

one anywhere near my beaten path, and the cost of gas to have them filled there

would offset any savings for me.

The Walgreens in my area (about 1.5 miles away) doesn't have Armour, but the Wal-Mart at Hwy 290 @ Spring-Cypress Rd does. When they asked me what strength I needed I told them 0.2 mg because that was what Dr. Gibbs wrote on the Rx. What would be the equivalent in grains? Thanks for the info Betsy. I actually found out tonight that my local Wal-Mart has it, I just need to find out the mg to grain conversion. This Wal-Mart is only 4 miles away. I'm sure there are Costco's everywhere. There a few within a few miles from me and I'm in Plano. Someone else's post reminded me that you don't need a membership to get prescriptions there. If your interested, you can check their website and put in your zip to see how far away you are. I couldn't check SamsClub prescriptions online, but if Costco has it, I'm sure they will too. Their site said call for prices. The Costco site lists all of the prices. I would be really surprised if Wal-mart doesn't have it as well.

Can you tell me what dosage of synthetic you were on and what dosage of Armour was prescribed. I just want as much info as I can before I go back for my lab results. Good luck and please let me know how you do on the Armour... Judy

You do not need to be a member at Costco or Sam's to get a prescription filled. Do make sure that you get brand name Armour. Regardless of where you get it, you will have to remind them when you order refills and check you pills before leaving the pharmacy. They would love to slip you a generic. It is not the same. wrote: Thanks for the info Betsy. I actually found out tonight that my local Wal-Mart has it, I just need to find out the mg to grain conversion. He may have written the prescription wrong. 120 mg is 2 grains. That would be an appropriate starting dose. Are you sure it wasn't "2 gr"? That would make more sense. There is no .2 mg dose. You might want to call the pharmacy and ask what was prescribed. The pharmacist will probably have to call the doc before he can fill it. wrote: The Walgreens in my area (about 1.5 miles away) doesn't have Armour, but the Wal-Mart at Hwy 290 @ Spring-Cypress Rd does. Well, consider how much other information he undoubtedly has to remember. Some stuff is bound to "fall through the cracks". I'm sure he was also surprised to hear that I found it at Wal-Mart. I have no major complaints about him. After all: 1) he was willing to Rx Armour for me even though I'm one of his new patients so he doesn't know me that well, and 2) he actually listened to me and took me seriously instead of dismissing me as a hypochondriac, and 3) he's going to actually run the Free T3 and Ferritin tests. So I'm going to cut him a little slack (just a little though )Now I just need to get him or his nurse to call Wal-Mart back with the correct dosage information. I don't want to take this generic T4 junk anymore.~Chelle>> I am a patient of Dr. Lynn Gibbs and I was the one who informed him > that Armour could be purchased at places like Walgreens and CVS. Well, it's all been corrected now. The doctor's office finally called Wal-Mart, and then I called Wal-Mart...and then I went and picked up my Armour. Yes, I think that will be my biggest problem too -- patience to wait for visible results. But I'll tell ya'll this -- just knowing I will finally be on Armour has lifted such a huge burden off me that I'm flyin' pretty high already (on endorphins or whatever ). Tomorrow will be my first day on Armour (I didn't want to take it today because I had already taken my levo and I didn't want to risk having a hyper reaction). I agree. It is such a relief, I think we fly just on hope right at first. (I think that can also be called 'Placebo effect') So there might be a little let down after a couple of weeks...it takes longer than that.

Ahhhh, now ya tell me. I took the whole daggone pill this morning. We'll see how I react today, and then tomorrow I'll split the dose.BTW, do you or anyone else take thyroid "helpers"? I found one made by Metabolic Advantage called "Thyroid Support". 2 capsules contain:Vit B12 -- 100 mcgIodine (potassium iodide) -- 200 mcgMagnesium (magnesium oxide) -- 200 mgZinc (zinc gluconate) -- 6 mgCopper (copper gluconate) -- 300 mcgManganese (manganese gluconate) -- 2.3 mgSodium -- 20 mgL-Tyrosine -- 248 mgMulti-glandular complex (liver, lung, pancreas, heart, kidney, and spleen) -- 70 mgThyroid (thyroxin-free) -- 8 mgThey recommend you take 2 capsules twice a day but I only take two capsules in the morning, right after I take my thyroid pill. That's the only supplement I take anywhere near the time I take my thyroid. I take all my other supplements with lunch and dinner. What do you think -- should I stop this until I know exactly how Armour will affect me? Maybe I'll find that I don't need the "helpers" since Armour already has T3 in it. I welcome your input.~Chelle

Yep, I'm familiar with the "Placebo effect". I agree, that's what will probably happen. But I suppose that's better than feeling hyper[thyroid] after a couple of weeks. I don't want the doc to decrease my dose. It's low enough already, IMHO. But better to start too low than too high, right? ~Chelle>> > I agree. Chelle,

In my opinion, you will be able to gauge your response to Armour better if you're not taking supplements with it. In general you should probably only take supplements if your doc is aware of it and agrees.

I'm only taking what my doc has prescribed and recommended (in the case of vitamins).

>> I can't get the 'fin'ly got my Armour' conga beat out of my head! Sorry Judy! > > I don't take anything specifically for thyroid, but I do have many of the vitamins and minerals that you mentioned in other supplements. I've read that there should be a four hour break between taking the thyroid meds and certain other things like soy, magnesium, calcium carbonate, etc. because of their effect on absorption. I also avoid iodine containing ingredients like kelp and seaweed although it's been so long that I don't remember why. I guess, in my mind, it's to avoid going hyper. Having said that, if you've been doing it all along, then I guess it would already be compensated for in your numbers. Plus I could have it all wrong as well. Well, as I wrote in my previous post I'm going to scale way down in the supplement dept. for a while -- my multivitamin/multimineral only, nothing else, until I have a better idea of how I'm going to react to this dose of Armour. Simplification is a good thing sometimes -- actually a lot of times. Life is complicated enough.~Chelle
