My son will be 4 in February and still does not talk. He can say " omma and

ammaw " (momma and mammaw) and a few other words. They aren't clear but he tries.

We taught him basic sign and it is so much easier for him to communicate that

way. What type of PMG does your daughter have? Is she in speech therapy?

When did you PMG child start talking??

My daughter is 20 months old now and all she says is baba.. she used to say dada

and papa but hasn't said it in over a month since her last seizure.. I just

thought I would ask when you dids talked to see if she is way behind for a pmg

child or where she stands.. It just drives me nuts not knowing if she will be a

non-verbal child or not...

My daughter Abigail, now 11, started trying to make sounds that sounded like

letters at 7 months old. But then stopped. At 5 yrs old she could say plenty of

things but we could only understand 3 words clearly. We started teaching

signing at 7 months of age. She used this alot to communicate with us. When

she was almost 6 yrs old she had a jaw surgery that allowed her to open her

mouth alittle wider. She began talking more and eating by mouth more. Today

she is fluent in her speech. She rarely uses signing anymore. However, there

are times that I still have trouble understanding what she is trying to say to

me and I will have her repeat over and over until I can figure out what

syllables or sounds are missing. There are also times that she has totally

clear speech. And yes, she does say I love you very well. So keep the faith

and hope! Speech therapy also helps!

, Nisha had a difficult time with language. She starting talking around a

year. She could not progress past single words and like 5 groups. Like " Pa

broke " pacifier broke, " watch Dora " I want TV " cracker " I want food. It seemed

liked she had set templates for her needs. Speech therapy helped her over that

glitch. Now she is 4 and talks normal just when she is tired it is very quiet.

Overall it seems that she needs detailed instruction to learn new things.Speech

is so individual thing many typical kids have different schedules of learning.

My 2 yr old did not have much speech at 24 mos but then all the sudden spoke in

sentences. I really though she needed speech therapy too. She had ear tubes from

an infection that could not resolve after 5 months. If you have SLP work on what

they tell you, read books to her and try not to worry so much.

Lillian,

Out of curiosity, how does he tell you his wants? Does he use a communication

device?

My son is 6 years old and has BPP. He has about 12 words and has been in

speech

therapy since he was a little over 1 year old. His words are not too clear and

he says mostly vowels and the syllables for example: His name Evan sounds like e

han or hot dog sounds like ot og. It is like a toddler in which their parents

only understand what they are saying. Evan will likey never have a functional

speech and will use signing and a communication device. If your child is doing

good with talking even if they are 3 or 4 or 5 or older that is awesome as with

PMG speech is a huge issue and quite a few kiddos do not develop a functional

speech.

Mom to Evan 6yrs, left hemiplegia cerebral palsy, seizures, developmental

delays, mostly non verbal & 9 1/2 nda
