Abby,

I know that medication affects everyone differently. My Dad first started to

change in 1995 with memory loss and other strange things. He wasn't dx with LBD

until 18 mths ago. Early this year is when the hallucinations really started to

kick in. He was seing people (strangers) all over the place and some of them

were out to do him no good. He was having a very hard time differentiating

between what was going on on TV and real life. He was getting up in the middle

of the night and packing his luggage to go to his other homes. He was also

really worried all the time about the smallest things. The doctors put him on

Excelon (for the hallucinations & the shaking) and Paxil (for the worrying).

Both have been a tremendous help with the hallucinations and the worry. He is a

lot less confused and can follow a conversation. The downside I have seen is

increased sadness and I wonder if because he is less confused, he is more aware

of what is happening to him. He also has become stiffer

physically, has loss his appetite and is loosing his balance. The doctors say

this is probably side effects of the Excelon. It seems like a no win situation.

Hi guys:

I spoke to my dad's family doctor today who, surprisingly, knew quite

a bit about LBD (even though he didn't recognize it even after my

dad's surgery when I told him re: some of my dad's weird

hallucinations..).

Nevertheless, when I asked about Memantine he said he'd read about it

and it was still only available in the US but that Canada's approval

of it was " imminent " . He said his wife is a pharmacist so she'll

check to be sure. He told me we could consider that for my dad but,

given the fact that the Aricept seems to be working for him

cognitively, we don't need to consider it now.

Are your LOs on anything for their Parkinson's. I know the problems

associated with LBD and how medications for either Parkinsons or

Alzheimer's tend to cross one another out but is there anything my

dad could be taking so that he's not hallucinating or feeling so bone-

weary and shaking as badly as he does?

It's just killing me to see him like this.

I knew last week was too good to be true. Ah, those highs but damn

these lows.....

Abby
