It drives me nuts and I am not sure how I am supposed to meet the man of my dreams if I fart all night, lol. So, I was wondering about flagyl. Is it a prescription? _______________________________________ , Flagyl is my drug of last resort. It is for emergencies only. It is for when I am having diarrhea that will respond to nothing else and I can't live with myself. The upside is that it works fast. It takes only 2-3 doses for it to work and I don't have but 1 or 2 BM's a day and it lasts for weeks. I took it on vacation, and It was a miracle. I only had 6 pills that was left and as afraid it wouldn't be enough so I took 2 the first day then one a day and it was perfect. So I will use my script like that when I use it. I assume next time I travel.(Marta will thank me). Down side is Absolutely NO alcohol while taking them, It will kill you according to my surgeon. They taste horrible. I got the tip from Jo and to roll them in butter and let them slide down and they were easier to take. They are antibiotics and some docs do not ant to prescribe them due to the drug resistance issue. They should not be used every day, Once a year might be ok. For every day a product like devrom might be more useful. I don't get vacations very often so I use my little pills then or when the diarrhea is unbearable. Or at family request. Guest guest
, find a man who smokes. They can't smell. Okay, Flagyl or metronidazole, is an antibiotic prescription medication that affects anaerobes. Anaerobic bacteria populate our gut and digest food materials, typlically carbohydrates, that we cannot digest. A good example would be beans, they break down galactase, I think it is, and as a byproduct of anaerobic metabolism, gas is formed. That gas is within your gut. Some of it is reabsorbed, some of it must escape to the outside world. Metronidazole has some possible side effects: peripheral neuropathy, seizures, disulfram reaction (like taking Anabuse). It also can affect color vision, darken urine. Did I miss anything? I would save it for emergency use only. I have a theory: fear of farting keeps us on the straight and narrow. Guest guest
Marta, You are too funny. Thanks for the information. Maybe I will ask Dr K about it. I see him on the 8th of August. I can't date someone who smokes cause I am allergic to cigarette smoke or I might just consider it. I try to eat healthy to keep the gas in check. I am still learning about my body. I notice that if I eat too late, then I have gas the next day during the day but if I don't eat late, I don't. I also notice that if I eat something like white bread, it causes my system to be disrupted for a few days, not just one day. I have the bowel movement stuff in order. If I eat enough fiber and don't eat a lot, it is like before the surgery. If I want smelly, runny bm's well I just need to eat a few foods like half a bag (big bag) of reeses peices, lol. Since I cut out flour and laid off the sugar foods, I am maintaining my weight instead of bouncing up and down. Take care. -- Even in laughter the heart is sorrowful; and the end of that mirth is heaviness. Proverbs 13:14 -------------- Original message -------------- , find a man who smokes. They can't smell. Guest guest
, that is exactly what I have found. That is why I eat my sprouted grain bread like religion. The sprouted rye does NOT work for me, however. I found out the hard way. However, rye bread has always given me gas as far back as I can remember. marta > If I eat enough fiber and don't eat a lot, it is like before the > surgery. Guest guest
Hi Sharon, I'm so sorry you're still so miserable! I took flagyl and never got sick. I didn't have a metallic taste from it either. I don't drink so I can't attest to the reaction to alcohol. It did help my gas the first two times I took it but not the third time. I guess we can build up an immunity to anything. I hope it helps! I just cant understand why Dr Z wanted me on flagyl because I was having numerous bowel movements. It hasnt decreased the movements, but increased them. but at least now I know that others have had the same problems with this " miracle drug " . Guest guest
Hi Everyone, I wanted to ask about flagyl. I am not sure if I could use a prescription or not. I am thinking of calling Dr. K. My problem is that I have been having bowel movements about 15 times a day for the past 30 days. This is not the norm for me at all. My poor butt. I now have hemroids because of it. I have diarhea and I am eating healthy. This is definately a change. I was eating healthy and having a bowel movement between one and five times a day at the most. Then, all of a sudden, I had soft bowels and diarhea even while eating healthy. Does this sound like I need flagyl? Or maybe flagyl could help? Has anyone had this problem? About a month ago, I woke up and went to the bathroom in the middle of the night (bowel movement) and there was a lot of blood. Scared the heck out of me. I am not bleeding now, but I do have constant bowel movements. Every time I eat something, I need to go. I am ready to starve myself so my poor butt can heal, lol. Thanks for any help. Also, to answer the question about iron infusions. I had one after my surgery. I didn't get constipated. It also seemed to help at least get a head start on the iron. I hope everyone is okay. Take care. __________________________________________________
Guest guest
I have a lot of problems with diarrhea... and I am a believer in Flagyl. BUT... I have also found that eating GOOD yogurt does a lot to help my system. I have been eating two yogurts a day for the past week, and I can't believe how much better I feel and how much less I go! I highly recommend that in addition to calling Dr. K.... that you try adding a good quality yogurt to your diet. Elle
