Thanks, Larry, is it hard to set that up? Does the XP help menu guide you through it?

Logmein is a very good remote access tool that is free. It easily

replaced GoToMyPC for me. There is also software called MioNet that

comes with the Western Digital MyBookWorld back up drive. That is

also free connectivity but I have not used it much.

Thanks to all for the suggestions. I didnt realize there were so many options. I also looked at PC magazine

review of remote access which lists many options (are there others of these that any have tried? ):

We use Windows Remote Desktop. Works just fine for our purposes and there's nothing to download. You have to have a static IP address on the computer you're trying to access.

Isn't a VPN only useable if you have certain software or configuration already loaded on your remote PC or laptop?

I use a VPN to access the PACS system at my hospital from my office. So if you are traveling with your laptop or calling in from home, you are OK since you have presumeably loaded the neccesary software.

But what happens if you are at a friends house or a hotel with a computer? Could you still access the VPN.

I believe with GoToMyPC or LogMeIn you can use any internet connected computer to access your office EMR.

Is that correct?

Windows Pro can create a VPN wherever you like...just takes some work.

The websites automate things.

No static IP required. You can use a service to redirect to a dynamic

DNS as it changes.
