I am going to tuck your analogy of " like a cat watching a mouse hole " away for later use. It reminded me of one I use in teaching meditation. I tell the student to listen like they did as a child in bed at night when stange sounds are heard in the house. Listen so intently that you hear your own heart speaking to you.
