New poll for Loving-what-is

Enter your vote today! A new poll has been created for the

Loving-what-is group:

Hello, everyone.

It has been requested that I turn on the

e-mail address hiding feature of this

Yahoo group so that members can hide

their e-mail addresses. This feature

prevents users' e-mail addresses from

appearing in messages sent to other

members of the group. With this poll,

I'd like to invite feedback from the

group as to whether this is something

the group as a whole would want. There

are a number of issues to consider in

making this decision:

- Once address hiding is turned on, it

cannot be turned off. (This is because

it essentially represents a guarantee to

those members who choose to use it that

their e-mail addresses will not be

released through this group. Having made

the guarantee, Yahoo will not allow us

to renege on it.)

- Yahoo offers some protection for

e-mail addresses already, without the

address hiding feature. Specifically,

addresses displayed in the list of group

members and in messages in the archive

have the form " tbarron@m... " so complete

e-mail addresses cannot be retrieved

from those pages. The exception is that

your e-mail address will be presented in

it entirety when you are logged in.

Thus, if you want to verify this point,

look at someone else's address.

- Since address hiding cannot be turned

off once turned on, enabling the address

hiding option will permanently disable

the Polls feature (the ability to

conduct votes like this one).

- If address hiding is enabled, users

who choose to hide their addresses will

only be able to post through the

website. They would not be able to post

messages to the group via e-mail.

- Making direct responses to members

who choose to hide their address will be

more difficult -- you'd have to go to

the website and click on their name to

generate an e-mail to them. Simply using

your mail program's Reply feature

wouldn't work since their reply address

would not be available in the message

you received from them.

Let me know what you think... Thanks...

Tom

o Please enable address hiding. I want to use it.

o I won't use it myself, but I would like address hiding enabled.

o I don't think we need address hiding. Yahoo's default protections are good

enough.

*****The feeling here is that there is sufficient anonymity at

present in the way things function. I am satisfied with the status

quo. Not to provoke the paranoid among us, but if someone *really*

wants to get your email address (not to mention bank account and

credit card numbers), and they have the skill or know someone who

does, then they will do it despite any Yahoo! " safeguards. "
