Guest guest
Do any of the experts in thimerosal have any information regarding possible toxicity of merthiolate? It is thimerosal. It was certainly painted on lots of cuts and scrapes in children in the past. Any history of acute onset autism after merthiolate exposure? (Mercurochrome is another, different, mercurial compound called merbromin. Any problems with it? It was the preferred antiseptic when I was growing up, as it didn't sting like merthiolate, which came as a tincture (= in alcohol).) Thanks. Guest guest
Yeah, I read that about the scientist who died of a drop of mercury here http://www.lewrockwell.com/miller/miller14.html It was dimethyl-mercury. However, the thimerosal and mercurochrome (by the way, what is the form of mercury in it?) are dissolved in an aquous solution or something. If it was the pure stuff, we would all be gone by now :-) In my childhood these two " antiseptics " (it's now more than proved that they're inefficient) were also widely used for scraped knees and other little bruises that bled. I thought that any cut that bled gave access to the bloodstream, I mean, that's why people catch diseases like rabbies and tetanus. So that argument is fallacious. It probably doesn't contaminate as much as it would if it were applied to a complex wound, but still... not enough to make it " safe " . Ahhh.... our toxic childhood... *sigh* > > > When I was a kid mercurochrome was used liberally on scraped (and bleeding) knees. There's info about a scientist (from Duke, I think) who go a drop of mercury on her hands from using the wrong kind of gloves and died. > S S
