Lynne, here.

I'm sorry to have to say this but your dad sounds almost identical to my

granda as he entered the last weeks of his life, now this may not be the case

for your dad.

I hear you when you say that all you want is release for him, watching their

suffering gets harder and harder as the weeks go on.

I posted quite a long explanation, yet i missed parts out, of what happened to

my granda in the final week if you feel up to reading it.

I'm not sure what message number it is but it was done end of September,

begining of October.

Status on my Dad

My dad's condition seems to have deteriorated significantly in the

last couple of weeks. I am hoping that someone has experienced this

and can help me know where he is on the journey.

As of this week he spends much time in what appears to be a catatonic

state, but responds with a smile when you speak to him. Most of the

time his eyes are open, but unfocused. He is no longer able to

control his bowels. He has been incontinent for some time. He spends

much of his " sitting up " time with his head slumped in his lap or

back. Up until this week he was able to stand with help to get into

or out of bed and into his wheelchair. Now if he indicates that he

wants to get up, I lift him. He is beginning to have trouble

swallowing. He sleeps or zones out (as my mom puts it) about 18 to 20

hours per day. He still tries to communicate some, but his speach is

unintelligible.

I am hoping and praying that he is released from this monster soon. I

know he would not have wanted to continue like this. Even as I type

it, I feel guilty.

Thanks for all the support.

Lynn

Lynn:

I've just returned from spending the morning at the nh with my dad

and learned about the decline in both your dad and 's mother.

As I did to , I'm sending you lots of strength and adding your

dad to my list of people whom I pray for. Before this and before I

came on this site, I wasn't a very prayer-ful person but my

spirituality has truly developed in the midst of the heartache we

feel watching our loved ones struggle against this monster.

Please don't feel guilty for not wanting your father to remain in a

catatonic state. For many on this site, it's a sign of your love for

him that you don't want him to suffer in a manner that so robs him of

his dignity.

Please keep us posted Lynn. I'm sorry but I can't recall if your dad

is at home or in a nh. Wherever he is I know all is being done so

that he is as comfortable as possible at this time.

Courage,

Dad has never been able to tolerate the seroquel. He only takes

sinemet for the parkinsons symptoms and dilantin for seizures. We

have just started him on memantine, so perhaps there will be some

improvement. His lucid moments yesterday did seem more lucid...if

there are such degrees.

Lynn,

My mother had similar symptoms when she was on 1 1/2 tabs of seroquel.

She's now on 1/2 tab am/pm. Could it be the meds in your fathers case?
