Guest guest
Well, what they did the first time around was to pack his nose. A very painful procedure from the look on his face and the noises he made. Unfortunately, when it was unpacked, it began bleeding again. I guess it clotted over of its own accord, however he kept blowing his nose and off it would go again! The final time in emergency, we thought they might cauterize the spot, but the ear, nose and throat (ENT)doc said he couldn't see where it was bleeding nor could he see a clot. So, I told him that the ENT doc we'd seen the day before had said that if Dad began bleeding again, he was to have the emergency room resident put cocaine up his nose to dry it out. Yes, COCAINE, not codeine! The ENT put liquid cocaine up Dad's nose and I gather that wasn't such a nice feeling either from the faces and noises he made--makes you wonder why people would pay so much for the stuff! There was no bleeding and I guess the cocaine dried everything up eventually. We NEVER do anything the easy way in our family! Has anyone had a problem with high creatinine levels? I'm sure the answer is yes. I need to know what you did about it. My level in March was 1.8, so they cut me off from lasix and spironolactone (sp?). My level went down to 1.3, which seemed to be OK to some of the docs. I had bloating (fluid or unabsorbed blood fluids?) in my abdomen, so I was put back on the diuretics. Now, within a couple of weeks, it's gone from 1.3 to 1.8. My GP is suitably anxious and said to drink more liquids, but I drink a ton of water and other liquids every day. I know this is not a good sign for my kidneys and I sure don't want them to fail along with the liver. I'm thinking maybe it's time to cut down on protein? Not that I eat that much protein anyway. I eat a pretty balanced diet. Thanks for any advice anyone has! The doctor finally"burned" the vessel with some chemical on a stick( some silverdioxide , or silver something . Don't they do that anymore?? I am sure the saline solution is a good preventive, but to solve the problem there must be something else the doctors can do! Clara from OR [ ] Bloody noses One thing I learned recently about bloody noses is that they can be cause by many things to include dry air like we have in the winter. The second thing is that you need to pinch your nose for 15-20 minutes and see if that stops it. Also, if you bleed enough, eventually, it will come out of your gastrointestinal system. It can take up to 2 weeks to eliminate from your system. My Dad is 91 and we spent a week getting answers--3 trips to the emergency room! The final resolution was to use saline solution two or three times/day everyday. It took a few days to "scab-up" before we got to the saline solution remedy. According to my GP, we should all use a little saline solution during the winter months. Some of the over-the-counter nasal sprays can be bad if used over a period of time, but they can dry up the bleeding in the short run. As always, call your doctor or talk with your local pharmacist (they can be very helpful). Vicki
