, Dr. G had my child at ages 7 and 8 taking erythromycin in tablet form,

for long periods each time. She took a similar mg. dose as your son, 3X day.

She did not have tummy probs as I recall, we gave it following meals (full

stomach).

My daughter has not been a patient of Dr. Gs for about a year now, so I am not

as " up " on his thoughts and reasons behind things as I once was. I don't know

why he may have changed his mind about ery tabs.

If it's not too big a quantity of liquid, could you measure his dose into empty

capsules (get at pharmacy) and give them that way? Or can you have it flavored

at the pharm. to be more acceptable to your son?

If anyone can help with this I would sure appreciate it. With all

of the nasty meds Dr G has had us give Jack, getting him to take

pills made life easier. So for the past year+ he has taken all his

meds in pill form.

Now we have started him on Eryped....a liquid!! Jack is so

resistent to taking liquids. After forcing 3 doses of this liquid

down him he now refuses to take ALL meds. In other words, he is

fighting us over the Valtrex, Celexa, Diflucan....and it is so hard

to fight a kid over each and every dose. I asked Dr G for a pill

form of the Eryped, but he said it is too hard on their tummies.

My question is this....anyone else give erythromicin in a

swallowable (not chewable) pill form? And in what dose? Was it

harsh on the tummy? I am hoping there is a substitute med. (Our

current dose is 3 ml 3 times a day of the 400mg/5ml liquid....thats

240 mg per dose.

Thanks everyone for your responses. I do not know why this liquid

form would be different on the tummy than a pill form.

I have thought about putting the liquid into capsules myself....am I

crazy? Do you think a compunding pharmacy would let me have some of

these?

If not I will have to contact the office on Monday am and ask again

if there is anything else....this feels so much like going backwards

it is so frustrating.

The liquid form is supposed to be easier on the tummy.

It was for us. We had to go to it after the pill

form caused nausea. We did that for a week and then

went back to the pill form. Then it was ok. I would

go to the pill form, but make sure that you take it

with food--best with a meal. --- Kathy

One tip given by a drug rep on foods that are to be

taken w/meals - take near the end of the meal, and

follow up with more food so that the pill is neither

at the bottom or floating on top of the food. I tried

this w/ an antibiotic that was notorious for hurting

my stomach and it helped significantly. I had always

taken right before or right after. I doubt it was a

'placebo' effect, 'cause you just can't imagine that

from expectation that I know of.

Thought I would update everyone on the Erythro story...

Here is the deal with the med as I understand it......erthromycin

comes in several forms. Dr G prescribes the Eryped which is

ERYTHROMYCIN ETHYLSUCCINATE. Our pharmacist told us that this form

(ES) of Erythro is easier on the tummy. This comes in a 400 mg

tablet, but it would have to be cut in order to get the dosing

correct, and there goes the easier on the tummy part. So Dr G said

we would need to go to a different form of Erythromicin altogether,

which then is harder on the tummy than the ES. (does this make

sense).

SO, yesterday, got some empty gelcaps as some suggested, filled with

liquid Eryped, and down they went. It is 3 capsules for each dose,

thats 9 pills a day! And yes they are a bit big. But it did go

down....hope it lasts!
