It just kept getting worse so we stopped it. Gaylen
Guest guest
Becky, You might want to ask Dr. G about doing an ASO titer (Strep antibodies). My son was REALLY thrown off by strep and he wasn't even " sick " ... the only way we knew was that Dr. Goldberg ordered the ASO. A few days after starting Erythromycin, we had our boy back (the teacher called me from school to say it was a miracle). He was on Erythromycin for about 6 months 'til his titer numbers came down to within the normal range. Caroline
Guest guest
Becky....I think your theories are right on. Something has sent his system over the edge and trial and error may be the best way to get it back. As for the allergies....my son is on a nasal spray as well as night time allergy meds....maybe your son needs extra right now. As for Celexa.....my son outgrew his dosage....as he got bigger he needed an increase in the Celexa dosage. We have always seen GREAT improvements when increasing Celexa. We went through something similar to you last December after a Flu shot (!!) and it lasted 2 months. Increasing Celexa dose really brought him back. Bets of luck > > > Anyone else gone through this, and what turned out to be the cause? > > My son has been doing very well on the protocol , progresssing until about 6 weeks ago. He is on Famvir, Diflucan, Celexa, Zyrtec, and has had one IMGG shot. About 6 weeks ago, his spaciness started to increase slightly on/off with some deviation of his left eye (always a sign that something is amiss, usually when he's sick) > > > Since then, he's still very alert, happy, and interactive most of the time, but his running/flapping habit has gotten out of control. It's like he just can't control it. he's always been a big flapper when he's excited about something and likes to run back and forth when not occupied, but I could always distract him....it was more like a habit. Now, when he starts, its much more intense and he is totally tuned out. It's also much more frequent. He'll be totally fine, looking like a perfectly normal kid, then suddenly, " autism boy " takes over and off he goes, running in circles, flappping, kinking his head to the side and scrunching up his face with his mouth open. He does it most often when bored but there's really no set pattern. He used to do it mostly in the evening, but now its all day. Whats most scary is that he seems to have absolutely no control over it. > > He also seems to have developed a sound sensitivity, which he has NEVER had (cvering ears) His social anxiety seems to be increasing a bit, too, having a harder time in school and dealing with other kids. Overall, it seems to be a total increase in his SI issues. I've tried brushing and more OT stuff to no avail. Only new med is an increase in Famvir and adding IMGG to try and get the HHV6 down more (now at 40, down from 80) But the regression started before either of these med changes. > > My theories: > > 1. Environmental allergies throwing his system totally out of whack. We live in the foothills and its BAD right now, Zyrtec keeps him dry at night but not during the day, and doesn't seem to curb the itching eyes, sneezing, etc. When we play outside he gets totally stuffy. Regression started when everything got green...... I have EAs too and I've never been this bad. > > 2. Yeast? Only time I've seen him this stimmy was during die off with Diflucan. Celexa was great for improving creative thought at first, but seems to have lost its effect to some degree. SSRIS helped with social anxiety, but that's coming back now, too. > > 5. Viral count up? I doubt this, as viral issues for us have never really been connected to SI issues. > > Any insight/random thoughts/experiences would be appreciated. We have a phone consult next week. I'd really like to get him back on track before I have this baby in a few weeks!! A newborn and a compulsively flapping/running preschooler together might send me over the edge, LOL > > thanks,,, Becky > > >
Guest guest
My oldest did almost the same thing right after Christmas and I had the same list of possibilities you do. I had a strep test done, which was normal. We tried another round of anti-fungals, which didn't help. I've finally decided it was allergies. He's allergic to mold. We had a really wet winter and where we live it doesn't get cold enough to kill mold. Once it warmed up & dried out, the stimming, flapping (which he had NEVER done before) & noise sensativity went away. If you have a lot of allergens right now, that may be it.
