Clonidine: Guanfacine (Tenex)

Guanfacine (Tenex) is chemically related to clonidine, but it has a

longer half-life (18 hours vs. 6 hours) and it is less sedating.

Hunt et al. (1995) recently reported that guanfacine significantly

improved hyperactivity and inattention in 13 children with ADHD.

They also mentioned that several patients responded better to a

combination of guanfacine and methylphenidate than to either

medication alone. Many children with FXS have been successfully

treated with guanfacine when the side effects from clonidine,

particularly sedation, have been intolerable (Amaria et al. 2001).

Guanfacine can also be substituted for clonidine when the child

wakes up at 1:00 or 2:00 a.m. after a bedtime dose of clonidine. The

longer half-life of guanfacine facilitates a full night of sleep.

Actually the plasma half-life of clonidine is from 12-14 hours! We

have been using this very successfully for my highly anxious child.

We use 1/4 tab at 10pm and 10am with absolutely no sedation noted.

This med has cut anxiety, aggression, depression, and oppositional

behaviour better than any other to date. Finally my child is doing

well in school(he's eight). We also use low dose paxil.

Hello and Virginia - we have just swapped s zoloft to prozac - I

am trying to get him less anxious and more focussed. I know of someone in

Auckland whom is having good success with clonidine patches. From what I could

fine this lowers blood pressure and the side effect is less anxiety and more

focussed - this is from the parents observation etc . But I could not find much

on it either. could you let us know how it goes please - this would be my

next line of fire for my boys can still only focus for about 10 minutes

on school work.

As for prozac he seems bright as a button so far -the cross over was strange he

was a bit flighty for a day or two. We have to up the dose on Saturday so then

I will know what its really doing - but he is eating really well - seems to be

sitting down a bit more I think!!! He has a little attitude which is

interesting but at 12 years old I think he should have a bit of that anyway.

Hi Virginia - as for the valtrex Todd totally peaked after being on it for two

weeks - it was like a light had been switched on but at this time he was on the

IMGG's as well so we stopped the injections and over time he has fallen back

considerably in is ABA - so I have just emailed Dr to ask for a script so

we can do another few months of the injections to see if this brings him back

up. I will let you know but really disappointing I thought it was the Valtrex.

I will figure it but it will take a little time.
