None of the shells crossed the border into South Korean waters and the government is examining the incident, an official at President Lee Myung-bak's office said yesterday. The North fired artillery towards the South's Baengyeong Island as part of what appears to be regular drills, Yonhap News reported. Tensions have risen on the Korean peninsula since Pyongyang shelled South Korea's Yeonpyeong Island, also near the western sea border, on November 23, killing four people. The Panmunjom border has reopened following that attack. Advertisement: Story continues below The South's military began live-firing exercises off its coastline this week.
