(WPRI) - A Westport special needs teacher accused of allowing abuse to happen in her classroom is found not guilty of the charges. In January 2008 Rego was accused of permitting the abuse of a student with a disability at The Macomber School in Westport. On Thursday, a Fall River District Court jury found her not guilty on all charges. No one was home at Rego's house when Eyewitness News stopped by on Friday. Parents of children she had in her classroom said they stood by her side through the entire trial. Teaching assistant Liberty was accused of abusing a person with a disability. Police brought the charges against Liberty after a substitute teacher complained she saw Liberty " step on a students feet at least twenty times, leaving the child visibly in pain. In May, Liberty struck a plea deal that requires her to take classes on teaching autistic children, and prohibits her from being in a classroom.
