Guest guest
The use of aversives is horrifying to most of us, but the clients at Judge Rotenberg Center have typically already been through dozens of ABA programs which use the " least restrictive behavioral model " (such as positive behavior supports) before they are ever candidates for the " optional intensive treatment program " at JRC. Many of the clients at JRC who receive aversive therapy are so severely self-injurious they cause irreversible damage, such as brain injury and blindness, to themselves.that's pretty horrifying too. JRC sounds like it must be some backwater center of last resort. It probably SHOULD be a place of last resort, but it's definitely not backwater. From everything I've heard about JRC, every practice employed there is based on research, and the data collection and behavior plan development are meticulous. Although JRC receives a lot of attention for its use of aversives, their primary means of shaping behaviors is through reinforcement systems. It's worse that they are not accepting of trying another non-violent way of re-directing their son's behavior or modifying. I am so glad to know that we have improved on " behavior " techniques and treatments. Wow.
