But she does her long runs outside. I think you will eventually have to condition yourself to run out in the elements and learn how to keep proper form on hills. I just discovered that I can run much faster on a treadmill that I do running outside. I think it has to do with the treadmill being motorized, making it easier to keep your pace. I don't think there is anything wrong with you using the treadmill for now! You are just starting to run, right? Maybe try to set a goal to do one run a week outside, just to get used to it. You might want to look into a running book written by Jeff Galloway. He is really good BTW, 1 and a half miles in 18 minutes is great! Guest guest
<< Which training books did you get Amy?>> Neither are any good really - old!! I got The marathon made easy by Cliff Temple and Target 26 by skip brown and john grahm. It was all they had. I guess I am looking for one that says to train the way I think I should! LOL!! For one I think I need to admit that I am cheating by using the treadmill. It is so easy though - day care, no rain, no cold - I am a WIMP with the cold :-( With the treadmill I can monitor how fast I am going and how far and so on. Maybe once I get more confidence I can venture outside? For some reason I can MAKE myself go farther on the treadmill. Seeing the numbers inspires me for some reason. I have been doing 1 1/2-2 miles a day - I warm up, run 1/2 mile at 6 MPH then split it up with walks and jogs the rest. I can do 1 1/2 mile in 18 minutes which is better then when I first started and 1/2 mile took me that long! LOL!! I was just hoping it would get easier faster! LOL!! Amy M. <- who now boasts a 62 BPM resting heartrate!! AWESOME for me anyways! _____________________________________________________________ Get everyone in your Above Average Family a FREE E-mail box at Love@Home --> http://www.loveathome.com

Amy M, Why do you feel like you're cheating by training inside on the treadmill? I've done all my training on the treadmill and I feel as prepared (if not even more prepared) than all the people I've been training with. I joined the Galloway group, so I've been doing my long runs outside every Saturday, but other than that, I've been running inside on the treadmill during the week. I like it because I can push myself in terms of pace and I know exactly how fast I am running my miles. I don't think I'm cheating at all. I've been doing the training and putting in the miles. I have seen TONS of progress these past 5 months! So, I definitely feel that training on a treadmill is just as good as running outside! Don't get me wrong, I think you should definitely get outside once in a while to do some of your runs, in order to do some hill training, etc. I plan on doing one of my runs during the week outside now that the weather is getting nicer. But, for now....I don't see anything wrong with you training on the treadmill. The important thing is that you get used to consistently running every week and if it takes doing it on a treadmill to get you to do the runs, then do it on the treadmill Way to go on running a mile and a half in 18 minutes! That's great! You are doing a great job! I agree with and definitely recommend getting Jeff Galloway's book on training for a marathon! I love his program who has to run 23 miles this weekend....UGH! Guest guest
<< who has to run 23 miles this weekend....UGH!>. Are you going to run a marathon? If so - when? I can't imagine the day when I can do 3 miles let alone 23! LOL!! What sucks is I learned yesturday that I cannot do all I want :-( I have to give up the kickboxing class for now at least. I twisted my ankle doing a jumpin jack. I know how to do those for goodness sake!! just my body saying no you don't woman, enough already. I walked out of the class even though I could have went on. It hurt but nothing bad at all. BUT I knew what was coming - an injury if I didn't stop. Sure enough I woke up with a VERY sore outer thigh (is that adductor or abductor??). It is sore to the point that stairs HURT and I will do nothing today :-( So I learned a good lesson but I learned it a little too late. Amy M. <who will hobble to a hot bath soon _____________________________________________________________ Get everyone in your Above Average Family a FREE E-mail box at Love@Home --> http://www.loveathome.com

Amy M, Yes, I am training for the Country Music Marathon here in Nashville on April 28th! I've only got two more long runs left in my training (this weekend and then the first weekend in April, when we actually run 26 miles)! I NEVER thought I'd be able to run this distance, but with consistent training over the past 5 months, I've been surprised at what I've been able to do I'm sorry you hurt your ankle! I'm glad you listened to your body and stopped, instead of pushing yourself and injuring your ankle even more! Hope you are feeling better soon
