Guest guest
<< I had been feeling so good! I was getting up at 5am and working out at least 4 days a week with no problem. I felt wide awake when my alarm went off. I was loving it!! Now my energy is gone! Three weeks ago I donated blood and I haven't recovered! My blood pressure was just a bit on the low side (at least for me) and I've been having problems with dizziness when I stand up since giving blood. I am always exhausted. I have to drag myself out of bed every morning, which I usually do around 6:15 and you can forget any morning workouts. I feel tired all through the day and at night, I'm ready for bed by 8:30pm. At my doctor's request, I only donate blood every 3 to 4 months because I had a problem with low iron. My iron was great this time but I just cannot seem to recover physically. What can I do to help, short of taking speed? LOL! I'm sick and tired of feeling so tired all the time!!!! HELP! >> , I don't know if you eat meat. If you do eat red meat for a couple of days!!!! This always helps me!!! Also is it possible that you have a minor bug and just haven't given yourself the chance to recover? That's happened to me after donating. a Who needs to donate again :-#
Guest guest
<< Sounds like anemia to me. I would get your blood checked. Have you ever taken supplements/herbs for it? >> I did have to take a prescription iron pill for 30 days but that was almost a year ago. I was donating blood every 8 weeks and my iron was WAY low. My doctor told me I was giving too frequently. I am not scheduled for an exam until May but may see if I can get in earlier to have a complete blood panel done. Thanks to everyone for your help! Guest guest
<< Ann Marie - who hasn't given blood since >> I think I have given my last donation. I've donated about 2-1/2 gallons over a period of a few years. I can live with that, I think. It's not worth it if I'm going to feel this bad. It doesn't matter how often you get knocked down; what matters is how often you get back up.
Guest guest
<<who suggests that start with rehydrating herself to see if that settles things >> Thanks for all the info Janick. I'm not taking any medications so that's not the problem. I drink at least 64 ounces of water a day, sometimes more. Is that enough or should I increase my water intake? Is one blood donation enough to really deplete my iron? I was anemic about 10 months ago so I guess I could just be prone to low iron. I hate to take too much time from exercise since I just started this SELF challenge. I really wanted to finish it. Thanks again for your input. I am interested in hearing other info you may have on the subject :-) It doesn't matter how often you get knocked down; what matters is how often you get back up. Guest guest
<< Theoretically, the answer to this is no. However, as I explained in my last email. Women have a tendency to lose iron easily... That means that your menses combined with a blood donation, could of acted together to depleted your iron storage. >> Well, this doesn't really apply in my case because of the birth control I use. Guest guest
<< Hang in there! Hopefully, this is just temporary! I know it's a bummer to be on a roll and have something get in the way! Hope you are feeling better soon >> Thanks !! I have come to the conclusion that it isn't going to just go away so I'm going to call my doctor and see when I can get in to see her. She's usually backed up for several weeks, but hopefully it won't take that long since all she'll do is send me to the lab to have blood drawn. Thanks everyone for all the input! I did finish the workout though. who wonders why his mood changed so drastically. *-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-* Reach your full potential! Guest guest
hmm... not being a dr., I can't say for sure, but my thoughts would be that maybe you need rest up for awhile before you work out anymore?? Maybe you should call your dr and ask his opinion (or hers!)?? I would tend to think your body is trying to tell you you need some time off... but I could be wrong. I have had that before after giving blood, but usually only the same day. Good luck! Amy

Guest guest
" My blood pressure was just a bit on the low side (at least for me) and I've been having problems with dizziness when I stand up since giving blood. I am always exhausted. " Sounds like you have orthostatic hypotension... That usually happens in 2 situations: blood volume loss (which can be due to dehydration or acute blood loss) or medications. Theoretically the hypotension, if it were only related to the blood donation, should have resolved itself in a few days. My guess is that you are either dehydrated (ie you should try to drink more), or you are taking medications that can cause orthostatic hypotension... " At my doctor's request, I only donate blood every 3 to 4 months because I had a problem with low iron. " That's usually what they recommend to every person giving blood, at least in this province. " My iron was great this time but I just cannot seem to recover physically. " Iron deficiency (causing anemia) could also be a factor in your symptoms. Even if your iron was fine when you gave blood, you must know that women lose iron more easily then men (thru menses) and usually don't ingest enough iron to compensate (ie thru vitamin supplementation or thru diet). Janick who suggests that start with rehydrating herself to see if that settles things
Guest guest
, That happened to me a few years back. When I was younger, hubby and I used to give blood ever 3-4 months. This last time I gave blood I had exactly the same thing you did. I didn't do anything about it other than get enough rest and made sure I ate really healthy. It took a few more weeks before I felt better. Ann Marie - who hasn't given blood since > I had been feeling so good! I was getting up at 5am and working out at least > 4 days a week with no problem. Guest guest
Wow , that is too bad. I really hope you get feeling better soon or figure out exactly what it is. Yuck!! I know what exactly what it feels like to not have a good workout. I just had a terrible one on Monday! But, it had been probably December since I had a bad one before that.. I couldn't imagine three weeks straight!! I sure hope you get better-feeling. Guest guest
, That's the conclusion I came to also. We had given plenty in our younger years. I felt that it was not all in vain (no pun intended!) because my parents needed transfusions years later. We were perpetually replacing what they had used. I agree - it's not worth it! I'd make sure you are getting not just enough iron, but enough of all your Vitamins and Minerals, maybe give your doctor a call and take a few days off. If you can't resist working out <G>, maybe try some lighter type tapes such as yoga/pilates/stretching, etc. Colleen _________________________________________________________________ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com

I know what a bummer it is to be low on energy and for your workouts to be so tough! I hope that you can make an appointment with your Doctor and figure out what's causing your lack of energy!
