Guest guest
Amy what companies are you going through? I used network solutions to register my website. $45 per year and you pay by year and then I had it hosted by EV1 $20 one time fee to point the domain in that direction and $10 a month for hosting. I think it is at least 50mg and more is available for pretty cheap. Checkout www.networksolutions.com (They are the cheapest to register but not to host) www.ev1.net (pretty cheap reliable host) Ev1s phone number is 1- I use ftp commander to upload which is freeware. www.twocows.com Feel free to e-mail me GalofGOP@... if you want. I'd also be willing to help you with maintenance etc. Who needs to catch up on her e-mail and is reading them out of order :-) << k, so I thought I'd share my dilemma with you all and ask for advice... because as 'users', you can tell me what would bring the most benefit and seem the most reasonable avenue: I thought I would register the domain name taebofans.com - but here is what I have as for pro's and con's Cons - 70.00 for internic registration, 25.00 for the domain name for the year, a place to host my files = 40.00 set up fee + 20.00 per month for 100MB of space - and I would have to do all updates from home because I can't FTP from work. (in laymen's terms this means a bunch of money, and restrictions on when I can update due to my software at work!) Pros - the site would be easy to find for everyone searching, it would load much faster, and have NO pop up ads, I would have a cgi bin and perl code script access, (fancy stuff!), I would have an email = amynewcomb@..., and room for other emails (some of you could have the others!), I could probably find some way to use click action or ads to make some change to pay monthly fees. It would be faster for me to upload files. I would also have enough extra space (and email addies) that if people who chipped in wanted a personal section of their own - like you , a page maybe highlighting you as an instructor, or whatever... I could do that very easily. Ok - the other choices I have are: 1) keep it where it is at annoying geocities... 2) use my 70 mb free space at my comcast account - the downfall to this is again, I would have to upload at home, and the URL would be something like members.home.net/taebofans (not very attractive or easy to remember!) Comcast cannot do domain name hosting. But at any rate, I'm leaning towards just leaving the site where it is for now. I really personally can't see kicking out 130.00 bucks to get set up. I just think that's a lot of money - and I guess I'm not sure if the benefits are worth it for you all. I am just curious though - what angle others might see on this... I know I seem like I'm making much ado about nothing, but the fan's page is my baby I guess. LOL I've been going back and forth on all this for quite some time.... Input please! Unless you think there is a way to generate income from your own advertising revenue to cover your expenses, I wouldn't do it. You have done so much for us already. The ONLY way I could see you incurring the cost is if we all chipped in and covered it. Is anybody up for that? If we found 26 people, each could pay $5.00. If we don't, I guess that gives you more of an answer about what is important to people and what isn't. Thanks for doing the website...it is incredible! It is a tough decision, Amy, but I think if you find it easier to switch enough of us can help chip in the costs. For me, I do all my downloading at work since the modem is faster and I have a better set up, so that would be a big con for me. But there are some positive aspects too. Amy, I'd say do whatever is the best/easiest for you! I'd be willing to contribute to the cost to get you up and running! If we could raise that initial cost, would you want to do it? If you feel weird asking people for money...LOL, I'll volunteer to collect the money! I definitely wouldn't do it if it means you putting out the money....only if we have enough commitment from everyone to cover the initial cost
