Mount Bromo typically erupts once a year but — unlike nearby Merapi — it rarely spits debris and hot gas far from the crater and nearby towns are not considered to be in danger. A series of recent eruptions from Merapi has killed more than 300 people. The government said Tuesday it raised Bromo's alert after it started shooting ash into the air. Villagers often climb the 7,641-foot- (2,329-meter-) high mountain — one of Java's most popular tourist attractions. Indonesia is prone to seismic upheaval due to its location on an arc of fault lines encircling the Pacific Basin.
