A child was brought to my mother's school by a family who recently moved into the area. The public school their first grader went to was awful. The girl was basically swarmed and robbed of her money by other kids shortly after walking through the door. She complained to a teacher who asked the thieves. They said the money belonged to one of them and the teacher just left it at that. The girl got it again once the teacher was elsewhere. The parents took her out of public school when they saw complaints were getting nowhere and put her in the other school. Folks here in the US just need to understand that the US public school system may have a handful of good schools, but overall the quality of education from them has dropped by nearly two grade levels since the 1960's, probably more for some schools. I'm not optimistic that much will ever be done about bullying in schools for the simple fact that most administrators just don't care. " A running battle I had with an ex-girlfriend was over how good our schools were. I went to a public high school that one the President's National Excellence in Education award. She went to a Chicago Public School Magnet School. A magnet school is where all the best and brightest kids go. My school statistically was better than hers was. I do not remember the figures exactly, but I do know that my school had 5000 kids in it. Hers considerably less. My school's students performed better on standardized tests, scored higher on the ACT and SAT, and had a higher percentage of kids going to college, with a higher percentage of those going to college actually graduating. She still insisted her school was better because it was a magnet school. Administrator
