In it he said, " it is just not economically feasible to run a school for ABA given the costs of one to one treatment. Add the cost of supervision, insurance, rent, and taxes, and the cost is prohibitive. " He did say that the building is available to anyone who would want to start up a school or similar operation because it's specially outfitted and it's such a waste for a great building and location to go to waste. He said he had 17 staff and only 10 students. I am sorry to see it close too and I wish them the best. I'm feeling a little guilty that I didn't express my feelings to them last week. We are moving to Pearland in three weeks from new orleans, and had enrolled my son there, only to hear recently it was closing. We are now enrolling him in the learning repetoire. has anyone had experience with this place? I am also interested in learning more about the Houston Autism Meetup group. Thanks so much! When you go to www.Meetup.com, you can do a search for any category and city- be forwarned there are some odd meet ups in houston! It is a group of people with a common interest and they meet -usually monthly. Allan and Mellody Panzer were kind enough to have the meetings at their facility.They provided child care and snacks for kids and adults and a forum for parents to share and grow. I know that who ran the day to day of the school and is pictured on the page was a facilitator for the meet ups and posted to the TAA several times inviting people to attend the meetings. One meeting had Dr. Volpe come to speak, one had their ABA person giving background on an ABA program etc...attendance varied, but I felt the idea was great and gleened a great deal of info from Dr. Volpe. They had Rhatigan as well. As time went on, the meet up website continued, but the every other month meetings stopped. Probably cost prohibative. Meet up is all over the nations, so put in Houston and search for Autism. I believe there is an Aspergers one as well. I would contribute to that certainly, but I don't know anything about moderating the group or how much time the administrative things take. My sense it that ABA day treatment programs aren't terribly profitable, and the people who open them up are in the business because they are passionate about what they do. The thing would be to write a grant to help deal with the facility costs and staff (BCBA and a couple of BCABAs to oversee parents) . . . .. .I'm just not sure if anything could be gotten together quickly enough.
