A1 milk vs. A2 milk

This is a fascinating article on the A1/A2 debate. It sheds a lot of light

on the differences between these types of casein and the evidence behind the

A2 hypothesis. It is particularly relevant to those of us who are allergic

to " cow's milk " in a general sense, to autistic folks, diabetics, heart

disease sufferers and to schizophrenics.

A few highlights:

1. One large epidemiological study showed a clear association between A1

milk consumption and heart disease and type 1 diabetes. There was no

correlation with A2 milk.

2. A few animal studies showed that A1 milk is atherogenic and A2 milk is

not (unfortunately one was done on rabbits, which are herbivores so may not

have much relevance to omnivores). One study found A2 milk is protective.

3. A2 milk is the original milk. Approx. 5000 years ago there was a mutation

in Europe and the A1 genes spread through cow heards. Masai and other

African cattle only product A2 milk. Heirloom breeds tend to have more A2,

newer breeds - A1. Goats and sheep produce the equivalent to A2 milk

(proline is in position 67 like A2 cow's milk, whereas A1 cow's milk has

histidine in position 67, which seems to be the reason behind problems with

A1). From what I've read, this causes the 7 amino acid chain caseomorphin

to be released and many folks, such as autistic and schizophrenic folk lack

the enzymes (DPP IV) to break down caseomorphin. Caseomorphin is the opioid

peptide that contributes to autistic and schizophrenic behaviors.

This is fascinating. I haven't read the article yet, but based on

your summation, this information should be spread through the

grass-farming movement, and someone should make an effort to obtain

cattle from the Masai and interbreed them. There should be an effort

to replace modern herds with pure A2 herds within the

WAPF/grass-fed-aware community.
