When this happens to us I give my son Mag07 that I get from Whole Foods.

I have also used Magnesium malate made by Source Naturals. I use 1

capsule of either one or the other 3x a day. This normally will produce

the desired..ahem..results, within a few hours. I also use a little

ground flax seed (1 tsp) each day in his usual supplement schedule to

keep him on track.The side effect of extra magnesium is also that he is

more calm. I'm not a doctor but this works wonders for me. Trina

Hi Sharon,

Our son, Ben, sees Dr. Carol Redel at Texas Childrens' Hospital. We like her

alot and she is also familiar about some of the biomedical issues relating to

autism. Her phone number is (832)822-3131. Her nurse is also very nice

and great about returning phone calls. Good luck!

BTW, our pediatrician prescribed Miralax for Ben--on rare occasion he has

contispation. It's a tasteless, clear powder that you mix with liquid. It has

worked very well with him. You might ask your pediatrician about it while you

are waiting to get in to see a GI.

Can anyone recommend a GI in the Houston area?

My 6 yr old son has not been eating well for over a

month and it is getting worse, he has also been

constipated on and off for over a month and now he

hasn't had a BM in 4 days. He doesn't verbalize but I

think he has belly ache and I'm really worried.

My pediatrician gave us suppositories but they don't

work, and the GI he recommended doesn't see children

and I've called a few GI's from the phone book and

they don't seem too eager to see my son after I tell

them he's autistic.

I am keeping him home today and will try to find a GI.

any help is greatly appreciated - any outers areas of

Houston are fine too.

Thank you! i may have to consider going to Austin

becuz i've been turned down by 4 doctors so far

because of my son's autism, and Tx children's hospital

has a 9 month waiting list...

I'm sure he did have a loss of appetite the last time but we also had discovered

he had 2 more ulcers at the same time he was constipated. So that also may have

contributed to his poor appetite. I would imagine when you are constipated and

in pain--your appetite is going to suffer--just like anytime you feel bad for

whatever reason.

In 2003 - 2004 my son was treated by Dr. Olivé who practices

Pediatric Gastroenterology at Texas Children's Hospital and has offices in

Spring

and Sugar Land. When my son was 3 - 4 years old he had problems with

constipation and so Dr. Olivé did an x-ray and discovered his colon was filled

with

stool so we cleaned him out with the usual mainstream method of using magnesium

citrate and other disgusting stuff and put my son on Miralax a few times a

week and it cleared things up then after that it was a matter of better diet,

exercise, behavior modification and reinforcing BMs with a reward system of

lollipop-bribery. While we are on the topic of poop, now what seems to have

helped my son have a large formed BM everyday is buffered vitamin C. I started

out giving my son 1000 mg but his stools were too soft so I decreased it to

500 mg once a day and he's doing well with that. High doses of Inositol has the

same effect on BMs too with an added benefit of helping to treat OCD

behaviors, but that's a whole other discussion. Dr. Olivé does not have a warm

bedside manner, he is a specialist with a very focused view on the GI tract and

not the whole person but he's good at what he does. My son was his patient

before the autism diagnoses so when Dr. Olivé treated him we just knew about

the

developmental & speech delay so the word autism never came up but a year

later at a follow-up appt. I told him for the record but it didn't make any

difference in his treatment. CReece

I would avoid the Miralax if you can. I know some kids including my own

that were on this for some time and it didn't seem to work after awhile.

Miralax is not meant for long term use, (or so I was told by several DAN

doctors) and I find the Magnesium works so much better. I agree also

about the extra vitamin C it does help also. Trina:

I agree about Miralax, it does a lot of damage and makes some kids

behavior a lot worse.

There are some interesting posts about Miralax on the abmd list.

Many parent s like OxyPowder, I have never tried it, we usually use

Magnesium Oxide and extra Vitamin C. You have to be careful with the

Vitamin C if you are on a low oxalate diet.
