California Experiences Worst Whooping Cough Epidemic in 50 Years

Added Jul 21, 2010, Under: Health

California is currently experiencing what appears to be the worst whooping cough

epidemic to hit the state in 50 years. Already, six infants have died elevating

the number above what is considered an epidemic.

California health officials announced the epidemic of pertussis, which is the

official medical term for whooping cough, and expanded its vaccination campaign

for both adults and teenagers. Those who are exposed to babies have been warned

that getting the vaccination is important. The pertussis vaccine does not give

a person immunity for life. Outbreaks of pertussis have been found to occur

often in five year cycles.

It gets the name " whooping " because it is the common sound people make trying to

catch their breath in between coughing fits caused by the bacterial infection.

The coughing fits associated with pertussis can cause sufferers to have broken

blood vessels in their eyes, face, and even brain because the fits are often so

strong.

As of July 17, 2010 California has had around 1,500 reported cases of pertussis.

It is not yet evident whether the increased efforts will help wane the epidemic

anytime soon. July through September often see the most reported cases of

whooping cough.
