DANA POINT – A 23-year-old Utah man drowned Saturday while swimming at Doheny

State Beach, authorities said.

Calvin of Salt Lake City died at Saddleback Memorial Medical Center's San

Clemente Campus about 6:30 p.m. Saturday, several hours after he was pulled from

the ocean, according to the Orange County Coroner's Office.

Bystanders initially believed that was simply swimming in the ocean.

" They thought he may have been snorkeling, since they saw the blue Crocs on his

feet and thought they were flippers, " said Rich Haydon, park superintendent.

After an undetermined amount of time, someone realized was in trouble, and

beachgoers brought him back to the shore and performed CPR about 5:30 p.m.,

Haydon said.

They were joined by park rangers and paramedics, who took the man to Saddleback.

Despite the inclement weather, lifeguards had been at the beach earlier in the

day, Haydon said, but had left at 5 p.m. as part of the beach's fall schedule.

Both of 's parents were at the beach at the time of his drowning, Haydon

said.

was autistic, Haydon said, but it wasn't clear if the condition played any

part in the drowning.

An autopsy carried out Monday determined saltwater drowning to be the cause of

's death, coroner's officials said.
