Did you use salt?

The slimy substance could be harmful, and you ideally should have

scooped it out. White mold is nearly always harmless and that is what

I usually get on fermented food.

fermented beets are more of an aquired taste to me, and they do always

taste a little strange to me. But I have eaten plenty of strange

tasting fermented beets and never got sick. Maybe try a different

fermentation.
