André,

Thank you for the suggestion.

I also failed to find this word in Web or paper dictionaries. However,

Google gives several links to it (one in an Irish site).

Just out of curiosity, are all these misspelled?

yes - most likely.

Remember the " nepotistic " cells (in the early days of this list)?

The context made it clear that this must have been a typo for " neoplastic "

cells. Yet many, many list mates instisted that they found numerous

examples of nepotistic cells by searching the web. (Janos might remember

this, as he found the solution: at that time, Word's spell checker didn't

know teh word " neoplastic " ? - I wonder if the newer versions now do?)

Hi Ursula,

I'm sorry to bother my colleagues so much with this problem,

but among what I googled there are only a couple of sites written in

apparently good English, and both contained the same phrase:

Ireland. Any person who shall pretend or exercise to use any type of

witchcraft, sorcery, enchantment, or pretend knowledge in any occult or

craft or science shall, for any such offense, suffer imprisonment at the

time of one whole year, and also shall be obliged to ****obscursion***** for

his/her good behavior.

I just wonder what that means to a native speaker.

Sorry again,

.

Hi

Means nothing at all to this native speaker.

My guess is it's either a mistake for " observation " or some archaic Irish

legal term, nothing to do with a scientific context.

I didn't find it in the " big " Oxford, fwiw. From the Latin roots it sounds

like " being run against " , but that's not very likely in context! Probably

a typo, as others have suggested.
