Guest guest
Hi, It has been a tough summer re: OCD over here, too. My 16 year old son has been a lot worse, although HE thinks he is just fine and everybody else should get with the program. He is on 80 mg of prozac and we are thinking we would like to add Inositol into the mix. He is willing to do it, IF there are not very noticeable side effects and especially no increased appetite and NO WEIGHT GAIN. We are wondering about the form and dosage. We checked it out at the store and they have 500 mg tablets and the powder -- not sure how that is dosed. He is about 5'10'' and 140 pounds or so. What have any others of you done???? How much, how often and what kind of side effects have you noticed? Many Thanks! Diane
Guest guest
We are new to using it. We are using it in a powder mix called Relax Max. It has other things in it, too. This was what our therapist recommended. My dd is 10 and does not like the taste of it and does not like taking it, so we are struggling with that. I think it is good your son is willing to try. Guest guest
Hi Diane, My son is almost 12 and has been taking inositol for a little over 2 yrs now. He's not on any other medications. There is no set dosage for inositol, it's really just trial and error. It's best to use the powder form, because you'd need to take too many pills to get a good dosage. We started very low and slowly increased until my son said he could feel it was making him calmer. We noticed a difference too. When his symptoms start to creep back in, we increase the dosage some more. He was at only 5 grams for a while (this is considered low), and at his worst, he was up to almost 13 grams a day. Right now, he has no OCD symptoms, so I backed him down to about 7 grams a day. The only possible side effect that I know of is stomach upset, so you need to start low and slowly increase every few days. My son has never had any stomach issues from it. We use Source Naturals, and I buy it from iherb.com . I mix it in with his favorite juice, and he says he doesn't taste it at all. It supposedly has a sweet taste, so if it's mixed with something sweet, you probably can't taste it. Since your son is already on medication, I know you need to be careful with the amount of inositol you give. Others here may be able to give you more information about that. Best of luck to you. I always hope that others have the success with inositol that my son has had.
Guest guest
Diane, we used it too, alone, for a few years. Can't add to what said, it worked that way for us too. Start low, as it can cause stomach upset, but we didn't have that problem (maybe because we started with 1/4 tsp, then went to 1/2 tsp 3-4 days later, etc. I'd use a small dose, start with 1 tsp, see how that works for a couple weeks (since he's on Prozac) and then work up to 2 tsp. With the Source Naturals brand (we used it too, mixes really well, dissolves well), the 2 tsp would equal about 6.75 grams. It's GRAMS that you measure the dosage in. Source Naturals, if I recall correctly, is .845 mg per 1/4 tsp. Different brands of inositol powder have different mg measurements per dosage so look at the bottle. The powder is best as it will take too many pills to get to the grams/dosage. And buying online has the best prices, local stores are expensive. Here's an article on it: http://www.wsps.info/index.php?option=com_content & view=article & id=70:inositol-an\ d-ocd & catid=36:ocd-and-related-subjects-by-frederick-penzel-phd & Itemid=64 Also - Dr. Penzel (at above article site) is VERY good about responding to emails if you want to ask him his thoughts since your son is also on Prozac. I hope his prescribing Prozac doctor is okay with this, should let him know you are adding it, could show him the article if he's not familiar with inositol. Quick thoughts and good luck, do let us know if any changes! > > > > Hi Diane, > > My son is almost 12 and has been taking inositol for a little over 2 yrs now. He's not on any other medications.
