Guest guest
Judy, Hemochromatosis aka Iron Overload Disease (IOD). It's been an " issue " with parrots for years, so I've found myself studying it on and off for my " flock's " benefits. Parrots exhibit the same symptoms as humans in this disease... It's genetic - more common among Germans, English, Irish, and quite a few others that I can't name off the top-of-my-head.. The stored iron rusts the body out from the inside - one of the main reasons they believe men suffer heart disease more than women as women at least have menstruation, clearing some of the iron out. Vitamin C is an issue, as is fluoride (it doubles to triples the iron) as is Echinacea (high in iron)..you don't want to dose up on high levels of Vitamin C WITH Echinacea if you're in a " high risk " genetic group. And you especially don't want to do that if you have fluoridated unfiltered water. Anyway, here's a copy of something I posted to another group which should get you started on learning more..HTH. There are websites devoted to providing good information - here's a quick recap of some highlights... http://www.ironoverload.org/Diet.html> Review and description of " purpose of iron fortification " and types of iron: http://food.oregonstate.edu/c/fe.html Good overview of symptoms - html http://www.americanhs.org/whatisit.htm " The fortification (adulteration would be a better term) of our foods with iron should be stopped now! Germany, France, Belgium, and Italy have never allowed their food companies to add iron to their foods and England has since lifted the requirement. This should tell us something. The more iron there is in the diet, the more that is absorbed, and this practice is contraindicated in well over 30 million of our people. " (I really like this woman's site!! VERY good information - not alarmist - all my reading/research would confirm what she's written on all her pages.): http://www.americanhs.org/animalHH.htm http://www.ironoverload.org/Diet.html - What if you're anemic? There's a very specific blood panel which detects IOD (Hemochromatosis) serum iron, total iron binding capacity, hemoglobin and hematocrit, ferritin, serum transferrin receptor, transferrin and transferrin iron saturation percentage. <http://www.irondisorders.org/disorders/hem/detection_ironpanel.htm> http://www.irondisorders.org/disorders/hem/detection_ironpanel.htm Iron feeds tumors: Another problem is that iron feeds tumor cells. Iron is a growth factor for viruses, bacteria, fungi and tumor cells. Take away the iron and copper and you stop tumor growth and shrink the tumor. Some anti-cancer drugs are iron-binders, such as the mycin drugs (Adriamycin), but they also produce mortal side effects. How can iron and copper be removed from the body? Chelation therapy. Chelation refers to removal (a claw) of minerals. The body performs its own chelation by producing iron-binding molecules (ferritin, transferrin, lactoferrin). These binders are often overwhelmed by the iron. Transferrin transports excess iron back to the liver, which is where most tumors spread first. http://www.askbillsardi.com/sdm.asp?pg=cancer_regimen -Sharon, NH Deut 11:14 He will put grass in the fields for your cattle, and you will have plenty to eat. Hemochromatosis and vitamin c mega dosing I get newletters from the Doctoryourself website which is a website that talks alot about curing lots of diseases with vitamins. Whenever I feel a cold coming on I take mega doses of vitamin c to take care of the problem. This weeks newsletter talks about a condition I had never heard of called Hemochromatosis. I guess it is something about not being able to have lots of meat iron and a problem with taking lots of vitamin c? Does anyone know anything about this? Dr. Saul recommends a low to no meat diet, but since discovering Native Nutrition I am far from that. Do I need to stop mega dosing? Guest guest
Sharon Thank you very much for this information. This is scary stuff, I can't believe I've never heard of it before! I guess I'll keep doing some research, I have both German and English family lines. Guest guest
You're welcome, Judy. I don't think most people have heard of it - including mainstream doctors. The CDC, NIH, and Mayo Clinic all love writing about it, though. Since learning about IOD, years ago, I steered clear of any foods with iron additives - breads, pasta, cereal because it's thought that the bioavailability of synthetic folates and iron are DOUBLE that of naturally-occurring, especially risky for those with the inherited double gene for IOD. On the other hand, even without the gene for IOD, there are plenty of other negatives affecting health from consuming synthetic folates & iron - heart disease, depletion of B12 considering cause of dementia, ad nauseum. Here's an example of research discussing how synthetic folates/iron react/store differently in the body: http://docstore.ingenta.com/cgi-bin/ds_deliver/1/u/d/ISIS/23795130.1/cabi/ph n/2002/00000005/00000004/art00011/C18B200AD4DAE02E1132751022A4EF20042DD243A8 ..html?link=http://www.ingentaconnect.com/error/delivery <http://docstore.ingenta.com/cgi-bin/ds_deliver/1/u/d/ISIS/23795130.1/cabi/p hn/2002/00000005/00000004/art00011/C18B200AD4DAE02E1132751022A4EF20042DD243A 8.html?link=http://www.ingentaconnect.com/error/delivery & format=html> & format=html Friends of mine who have tested positive avoid all synthetic forms of folates/irons, donate blood once a month, and manage their IOD with whole food diets along the lines of Nourishing Traditions. I think it's good practice for everyone to do this, however. It is considered to be severely under-diagnosed in this country. My view on why that is isn't because the information isn't available and accessible, but that it isn't promoted by the drug companies as a Big Money Maker. When I think of how doctors over-treat anemia, it makes my blood boil. The only reason for anemia is internal bleeding but no one tests for that. Instead, they prescribe mega-doses, don't tell anyone about avoiding Vitamin C and fluoridated water... Ut oh..I feel a soapbox rant coming on so I'll wind up..LOL... I should have included this article regarding iron/manganese in your water system: http://www.water-research.net/iron.htm -Sharon, NH Deut 11:14 He will put grass in the fields for your cattle, and you will have plenty to eat.
