Guest guest
Unfortunately, I am also not Dr., but I have found it necessary to learn as much as possible having an autistic child. Diseases that have become significant issues in our culture that have a proven genetic link include, but are unfortunately not limited to Huntingtons, Hemophilia, Sandhoff, and Tay-sachs. A genetic disease begins with the first pt. Some easy to find. Some not. Some like Huntington's, do not show up until later in life, allowing reproduction to help spread the genes. In my opinion, " studies " which hold vaccines blameless in ASD do nothing but discredit the field of medicine. However, to assume that vaccines are " the cause " , or toxins found in the environment are the villain, is to ignore what makes them the agent of this tragedy. Why does it occur in some children and not others, all exposed to the same agents. As to the DSM-4, it is the effort of a community of doctors, all giving opinions. No better and no worse than psychological testing which uses opinions of those who interact with the child. Why are some children verbal and some not? Why do some have GI issues and some do not. Why do some appear to be normally developing until given vaccines, then show major regression? Why are some (like mine) extremely aggressive and some not? My daughter fit all but one of the criteria of the DSM-4, yet on medications, she appears much less symptomatic. Every effort I have made to learn more about contributing factors to ASD have been like pulling teeth. There are always reasons to not share data, and until this stops, we will never learn what we are dealing with.
