moldy sprouts

Hi all,

Just trying to grow my second flat of greens (it's a mesclun mix). The

first set didn't take - too humid, they got moldy - but this set sort

of did. By " sort of " I mean that they've all sprouted up, but there's

some fuzzy white mold at the base of some of the sprouts - it was

STARTING to show on the roots of a few seeds, but before I threw them

out all the rest sprouted.

So the question is - do I have to chuck the whole batch, even though

most aren't moldy? Are they all contaminated now, even though the mold

appears to be just at the roots?

Thanks for your advice!

Hi, I had that occurrence too and then one of the sproutfolks here told

me it was not mold, that those teeny tiny fuzzy white hairs that grew

around the roots were actually roots and not mold. I get them every

once in a while. I tend to smell them and if they do not smell bad,

moldly like, I go ahead with the batch. Hope this helps. Growing

sprouts is really an adventure! Diane

Hi,

That fuzz is indeed NOT mold, but rather root hairs. Root hairs are microscopic

roots that

are visible on some seed's roots (sprouts) - most commonly the brassica family

(broccoli,

radish, cabbage, mustard, etc., but also on others. You can learn a little more

Fuzzy doesn't necessarily mean moldy. Black fuzzy means moldy. But not

white fuzzy. Which color was your " fuzzy " ? If white, rinse, rinse, rinse

and continue to sprout.

moldy sprouts

What would cause sprouts to go mouldy? I was sprouting some radish seeds for

sandwhiches and this morning they were all fuzzy. What can I do to prevent

that next time?

To prevent moldy sprouts: better drainage, rinse more frequently,

soak seeds in food grade hydrogen peroxide/ water solution before

sprouting and can rinse with same. Also, tiny seeds don't need to

soak for as long as big hulled seeds, for example brocolli shouldn't

soak for more than an hour-2 before sprouting but sunflower seeds can

go all night.

I bet they weren't even moldy!!! Look closely next time, some seeds,

including I think radishes, have very tiny roots coming from the main

roots that are so small they look fuzzy. I'm pretty sure this was

what you thought was mold. Better luck next time!

Yep, white " fuzzy " stuff are a type of air-roots on some seeds/grains. The

best thing to do with sprouts is get used to the " good " and " bad " smell of

them. If sour smelling, and not growing well, they're possibly old, moldy,

etc. If " fresh " , " sweet " , especially after a good rinse, they're

" healthy " . It's all part of learning. I throw hydrogen peroxide in my

first soak with all my sprouts. That way, I never see mold and they sprout

much faster than without H202. Bummer on throwing them. Radish and

broccoli are my favorite.
