Guest guest
My daughter hates getting her hair brushed too. She runs all over the house when she sees me with the detangler comb and squirt bottle (she has curly hair and I have found this works best), I have found a trick, I " bribe " her by combing her hair while she brushes her teeth. She loves to brush her teeth and she gets to pick out her own toothpaste so she is extra invested in it. Is there a trade off to possibly " bribe " her with? Guest guest
Part of the sensory diet our Occupational Therapist has given us for Heidi is to brush her hair twice a day. I hate doing it. Heidi hates it. We just stopped. I think she needs to learn to do it herself but I just don't know how to get her interested. We last brushed her hair on Friday (is wednesday morning here now). Is a battle I'm just not ready to face. Cheers Marita Subject: Re: help with obsessive behavior To: Autism_in_Girls Received: Wednesday, 9 July, 2008, 8:33 AM Chez , it maked me remember much of when was of little had of long hair too and hated to have of it touched or combed and not wanted of the mother to do it at all because she never really brushed of combed she was painfull in the care of it , and it was as if she ripped it out of the head of me. Guest guest
Angie, I hadn't even thought of bribes. Suppose because hairbrushing is a torment we both avoid. Great suggestion thank you. Also love the idea of giving her an alternate sensory input to counteract the pain of hairbrushing. Might try with the vibrating pillow to see if Heidi will sit on that while I brush her hair. Thank you so very much. Marita who somedays feels she needs to wear a big " L " for learner Mummy. Guest guest
Sondra, That is really interesting about the motor skill developments. Once again something I hadn't thought of. Would playing with brushing the hair on a doll help to build hair brushing skills? Cheers Marita Subject: Re: help with obsessive behavior To: Autism_in_Girls Received: Wednesday, 9 July, 2008, 8:48 AM I to forgot to ask if you daughter has of tke skills to be of to brush her own hair or fix it for her self. or does she still need of you to care for it in complete? as for me did not have of the ability to motor plan of brushing my own hair well until was late teen years but could do simple brusing but not well before then. could not do hair into pony tails or pigtails for self until was much older like around age of 18- 20. sondra Start at the new Yahoo!7 for a better online experience. www.yahoo7.com.au
Guest guest
Your reply inspired me to try again with the vibrating pillow and brush Heidi's hair and it worked. So building on the success we went to visit the hairdresser and with the aide of her vibrating pillow and some chewy lollies Heidi had her first haircut in several months. Thank you so very much Sondra. Cheers Marita Subject: Re: help with obsessive behavior To: Autism_in_Girls Received: Wednesday, 9 July, 2008, 9:46 AM I to think too if had been of given a sensory input that was of enjoyable and took of my attention away to where I to be of more hyper focused to the sensory input than the overload of hyper focus to my hair being of brushed might have worked but since none was ever given to me it caused my brain to hyper respond to the sensations of my hair being riped off my head LOL/ sondra Start at the new Yahoo!7 for a better online experience. www.yahoo7.com.au
Guest guest
Sondra, My Mum tells me I am named after the midwife who helped deliver me  Both mum and dad had been so determined they were having a boy that neither of them thought of a girls name. I've seen several different variants on what Marita means from 'little ' to 'beloved'. Cheers Marita Subject: Re: help with obsessive behavior To: Autism_in_Girls Received: Wednesday, 9 July, 2008, 9:51 PM I to also wonder of you name as it appears very cultural and isof beautiful and so wonder of its origin? sondra Messages in this topic (14) Reply (via web post) | Start a new topic Mes Start at the new Yahoo!7 for a better online experience. www.yahoo7.com.au
