Guest guest
Hi, welcome! Yes, OCD can get worse when beginning the medication (or even just starting therapy). But that can actually be a good indication that the medication will work! So we'll cross fingers that's the case for your son! Anxiety can increase too, hopefully this settles as his body adjusts to the medication. I think nighttime is often worse for our kids, less distraction or something, bedtime coming up.... Hopefully any depression may subside as his OCD improves, if you think OCD may be a cause for his being depressed. Glad you found our group! My son (now 23) hoarded a little, like not eating/using some things but a lot of anxiety if I wanted to get rid of it, etc. Wasn't a huge problem for us, it was more " items " than " everything. " But my mother (now deceased) became a problem hoarder in her old age, and she was always a bit bad about getting rid of anything when I was growing up too. Keep us updated on how he's doing and how the Prozac affects him. > > I am very happy to have found this group, the information and support I have found already is fantastic! > My ten year old son has OCD, which began as early as age 5. It has just become a big problem in the past 2 years, and this year he has began hoarding food, trash, and just about anything else in his bedroom closet. His anxiety at school became so severe that I have had to take him out and he currently has a home-bound teacher. > He has been seeing a therapist for 6 months and recently began taking Prozac (less than 2 weeks). > > My question is: Is it normal for the anxiety to become worse when beginning this medication? He is only on 6mg and will be increasing dose to 10mg this week. His compulsions/rituals and hoarding are much worse since beginning this medication. > > Also, his anxiety is always worse at night. Guest guest
Hi, My daughter 11 has OCD (it started around age 8), started prozac 5mg about 2 weeks ago as well. She has not had any change in symptoms. Her anxiety is definitely worse at night. To: From: @... Date: Tue, 28 Feb 2012 23:59:22 +0000 Subject: Re: Hello, new here with a few questions Hi, welcome! Guest guest
Anxiety is soooo hard to see our kids have. My son has been on prozac for 2 years. He is 14 now. I do think it takes time for the medication to get in their system. We tried increasing his this past December and the increase caused more anxiety. I think if we had tried increasing in smaller increments, we would have been okay. I didn't give it enough time. He is now on 20 mg of prozac. It is definately a trial to see what medication works. AND it is very hard to be patient. I always want things better right now and OCD isn't like that. It has become a maintenance condition with our son. Glad you found this group too. Someone is always here to help!!!
