AIHA Mold Teleweb

Hi, Sharon:

It is unlikely that the AAOHN teleweb will be the same info on mold

that will be taught during the AIHA teleweb. Dr. Rene Salazar (it is

a he) was a member of the AIHA IEQ Committee at one time, but he is

no longer a member. The AIHA teleweb will be taught by members of

the AIHA IEQ and Biosafety Committees, as I mentioned in my posting.

Drs. and Morey have participated in the writing of the AIHA

Field Guide and the upcoming Green Book. Dr. Salazar has not

participated in those publications.

You will note the following in the advert for the AAOHN

telweb: 'Salazar holds an undergraduate degree in microbiology, and

masters and doctorate degrees in Public Health from the University of

South Florida, College of Public Health.' I assume that is the

qualifications that Dr. Salazar presented to AAOHN for teaching their

telweb on mold.

AIHA does not 'monitor' its members in terms of what they teach about

any subject, including mold. Although membership carries certain

privileges, it does not carry with it any obligations of the member

to comply with a certain criteria in terms of their activities.

Members are free to teach what they believe, even if it is

an 'alternative' viewpoint to what AIHA's policies are. Having said

that, I do not know what Dr. Salazar will teach in the AAOHN teleweb,

so I don't know if it will be different than AIHA's policies and

publications. The AAOHN teleweb does not carry AIHA's endorsement,

so Dr. Salazar is free to teach whatever are his beliefs on this

matter. Other AIHA members are also free to disagree with Dr.

Salazar, if they so desire. Finally, Dr. Salazar cannot imply n his

presentation that he speaks for AIHA, or that his views are endorsed

by AIHA. I am hopeful that he will not do that.

I trust that answered your questions on this matter.

You’re playing naïve and narrow-minded.

No organization can restrict the trade of

an individual (this is what attorneys for organization fear more than true

conflicts of interest – see  Marasco*: Standards Development: Are you at Risk?

ASTM Standardization News, pp 20-25, 2000).  They can strict the promotion of

an organization’s banner or policy however.

Many organizations have differing bents on

everything from how to make tires to standards for hospital care – everyone has

an opinion.

Consensus is census of the folks

participating.

Just because an organization gets

government funding only means the use and promotion of those monies are

restricted.

Subject: Re: Re: AIHA

Mold Teleweb

Thank you, Don. Yes, that does

answer my question. So does that mean that the nurses of AAOHN (American

Association of Occupational Health Nurses) could possibly be being taught

just Dr. Salazar's opinion regarding mold, remediation, etc - and not what AIHA

has deemed as a professional organization to be the state of the art

understanding of the matter?

Why would AAOHN not come to AIHA directly

to assure what they are receiving is the state of the art info, according

the AIHA?

It is of concern, because nurses are

often times the first to see/treat mold patients. As I understand it,

several AAOHN members work within the clinics of AOEC and the Pediatric Units.

AOEC is government funded. It would

be a shame if this government funded group - that has been given the charge to

advance the understanding of environmental illness in children - was

receiving the wrong information regarding state of the art understanding of

mold induced illnesses.

Wonder how one would go about finding out

if Dr. Salazar is teaching state of the art, or adhering to the old ACOEM

defense party line?

I am certain the nurses of AAOHN/AOEC

would not want to be told anything that might impact their decisions when IME's

are being performed on injured workers - or thru the PEHSU's - evaluations of

mold injured children.

1.         You said:  “Don't you think that is something that would be good to know?”

Good for the nurses to know.  Not necessarily you.

It

could be implied that you are more interested in a means of pointing a finger

instead of helping the nurses.

If

you were interested in helping nurses (or others for that matter), perhaps you

should be doing your own seminar.

2.         You said:  ‘Just because I ask a question does not mean I am playing

you’re not denying very well.

Hey Tony,

Nice to see things have not changed with

you, which means I assume all is well.

Just because I ask a question does not

mean I am playing " naive and narrow minded " ANYTHING.

I am merely curious to know if the nurses

of AAOHN are being taught what the AIHA would teach them, if the governing body

had its say so in the seminar.

Do you have a problem with that?

Don't you think that is something that would be good to know?

Re your "Wonder how one would go about finding out if Dr. Salazar is teaching state of the art, or adhering to the old ACOEM defence party line?" I suggest a first line of approach is to ask him on the internet. That should be interesting, no matter what the outcome,; even a 'no answer.'

I've known Dr. Rene' Salazar for years. He is more than qualified to

teach this seminar in both education and experience. And he is a

gifted communicator. Before I started a competing consulting firm, I

organized many IEQ conferences. Dr. Salazar was always extremely

well-regarded by audiences. His consulting firm, Salazar Consulting

Group is based in Tampa, Florida. I found a web-site:

http://www.salazarconsultinggroup.com/ I'm sure he'd be glad

discuss his training session. He's quite approachable. Hope this

helps.
